Page 2-A jp Superintendent Reports 'i • •• 'Si]’ Recently someone asked the question. “Where does the money go that is expended in the Edenton-Chowan Schools?" It is a very good question and one to which this column will address itself. Analysis of the budget for the Edenton-Chowan Schools, and comparisons with those "'with other school units in the area reveals some interesting data. Budgets consist of two types, current expense and capital outlay. Data is not available, at present, to compare the capital outlay budget of the Edenton- Chowan Schools with that of surrounding school systems. Capital outlay expenditures are those funds expended for renovation and construction. It can be reported, however, that the capital outlay budget for she Edenton-Chowan Schools for the current year is SIOO,OOO. This money has been used to upgrade and improve our physical facilities. Comparisons are available on current expense budgets of school systems in the area. Current expense funds are those used to pay for instructional services, plant operation, plant maintenance, fixed charges, auxiliary services and administration. The greatest amount of the current expense budget, 65.2 Hacks Report Indicates Loss O. T. Sloan, president and chief executive officer of Macks Stores, Inc., announces the results of operations for the 12 weeks ended March 22, 1974. The report is unaudited and subject to possible year end adjustments. The company reported sales for the 12 week period of $4,647,077 compared with $4,123,725 for the same period of 1973, an increase of 12.7 per cent. The company sustained a net loss during the period of $41,200 according to Sloan compared with net earnings of $7,410 for the corresponding period of 1973. The net loss this quarter resulted from significantly higher interest costs and substantial increases in certain other operating expenses. The first quarter characteristically generates relatively low sales volume which limits any response' to escalating costs said Sloan. Sloan adds that he is confident that the oompany will report satisfactory earnings for the year. BRING NEW LIFE TO YOUR CARPETING Revive the original beauty of your rugs. This includes teacher’s salaries,, instructional supplies, textbooks and the like. This percentage is slightly higher than the regional average of 64.1 per cent, but lower than the state average of 66.8 per cent, Plant operation costs, that is lights, water, phone, fuel, wages for janitors and maids, janitorial supplies, show a similar pattern. The Edenton- Chowan Schools expend approximately 4.6 per cent of the jiotal current expense budget for plant operation as compared to 4.2 per cent for the northeastern, “Region R”, counties and 5.1 per cent for the state. Funds for plant maintenance, repairs to buildings, grounds, heating, plumbing, electricity and maintenance personnel consume 2.3 per cent of the current expense budget. This compares with an average of 3.1 per cent and 3.2 per cent, respectively, in Region R and across the state. Fixed charges are basic, yet they take a goodly portion of the budget. Fixed charges are items such as social security, retirement, insurance, and health benefits. Eleven and six tenths per cent of the current expense budget must be set aside for fixed charges. This compares with 11.0 per cent, or the average in Region R and 11.8 per cent statewide. Gas, oil, tires, tubes, repairs and parts for busses and transportation are those items which compose the area of auxiliary services. Almost one eighth, of the current expense budget, 12.7 per cent, is expanded on these items. This compares with a regional average of 12.9 per cent and a statewide figure of 10.2 per cent. Administrative services consists of the smallest per cent of the total current expense budget, only 3.6 per cent. Items included in this area are administrative salaries, clerical assistance, office expenses, audit, and attorney fees. This figure is considerably lower than the regional average of 4.4 per cent. The state average for this item is 2.9 per cent. It is hoped that the above paragraphs have provided you some insights into how your tax dollars are expended for education. n ' i- in . ,i - CARD OF THANKS I would like to express my thanks to Dr. Wright, Dr. Bond and the nursing staff of Chowan Hospital and to the friends and neighbors for the many kind thoughts during the illness and death es my mother Mrs. Lucia Chinsolo.
