CLEAR YOUR CALENDAR FOR THE FALL HAPPENING AT SWAIN AUDITORIUM EVERYONE IS INVITED Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday 7:90 Each Evening OCT.G9 Featuring: Mr. Albert Long Report From Washington At a time when inflation is weighing heavily on the shoulders of every American, the United States Department of Agriculture has come up with an incredulous proposal. According to The Washington Post, the USDA is considering plans to send a “song and prayer tent show” across the land to convince Americans that food prices are not all that bad! As a member of the Senate stated, “...the tent show idea was almost incomprehensible, and more effort should be spent on helping farmers and reducing middleman food profits.” The basic idea of the tent show, if put into effect, would be to go to the major cities explaining food prices. The momo from USDA concluded with, “For maximum emotional impact, all audio will be musical rather than verbal, ranging from a hymn of thanksgiving as the pilgrims bow heads over the first harvest to ‘America The Beautiful’ as the best of this year’s crop stands for harvest.” No comment. Due to the religious holidays. House action was extremely light during the past week. Several Conference Reports on legislation were approved by the House and Senate. The major legislation considered by the House was Changing the Composition of the Penny and Authorizing Grants to Eisenhower College and Rayburn Library (H. R. 16032). In summary, Section I is standby legislation in case the price of copper should make the standard penny more valuable for its 95 per cent copper content than as a coin. The Secretary of Treasury could either use less copper in the penny or, after explaining in detail to Congress what substitute materials he intended to employ, and waiting at least 60 days thereafter while Congress is in session, mint an alternative one cent piece. The latter authority would expire December 31, 1977. Section 2 provides for grant to a maximum of $10,000,000 to Eisenhower College, Seneca Falls, New York, of 10 per cent of the Treasury 's receipts from the sale of proof silver dollars (8.306,294 such coins have been sold so far at $lO each). The College would be required to turn over to the Samuel Rayburn Library, Bonham, Texas, one-tenth of any money received from this source. In keeping with the spirit of the National Bicentennial Celebration, the House of Representatives on Wednesday last conducted a re enactmentofthe First Continental Congress. The feature speaker was Alistair Cooke, who is well-know for his TV documentaries.
