Such a service, he said, would serve the needs of many thousands of Eastern North Carolina citizens in rural areas and communities within a 75 to 100 mile radius of Greenville. He said this ’copter service might also be coordinated with the existing military emergency transportation system at various military, air force and coast guard bases in the region. “Many of our roads are still not adequate,” Jenkins said. “Helicopter service will meet a real need of our citizens.” He said he has asked that a modem pad free of obstructions and hazards be included in the architect’s designs. Speaking to public school superintendents of NCAE District 15 here Jenkins said he was pleased to announce that East Carolina University has purchased 50 acres of land for the ECU Medical School Building program. He said total estimated gliding costs for a basic medial sciences complex and a teaching hospital over the next few £ years will be approximately *4O to ISO-million. “as opposed to the scare figures which ought to be ignored.” The site for the ECU medcal complex will be adjacent to the new $16.&-million Pitt Memorial Hospital now under construction near the site of the present Pitt Memorial hospital. The area already includes complexes of physicians’ offices, clinics, laboratories and technician services. In his talk, followed by a question and answer session, the ECU chancellor outlined the entire development of the medical school program at East Carolina culminating with approval of the four-year degree-granting medical school plan by the University of North Carolina system’s Board of Governors. He emphasized close cooperation between the new medical school program and the state’s now-established system of Area Health Education Centers (AHECs).the largest of which, covering 17 hospitals in 24 counties, will be based at ECU He predicted the first family practices residency program will be operative at Pitt Memorial Hospital within one year. Food Stamp Series Will Change WASHINGTON, D.C.-Tne U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will replace the current 50 cent, $2 and $5 food stamp series with a 11, $5, and $lO series on March 1. USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) said that the larger denominations were prompted by the volume of coupons meded to meet increased food stamp allotments, .paper shortages, and increased production and shipping costs. The new food stamps - brown ($1), purple ($5), and blue green ($10) - uk a more sophisticated design to deter counterfeiting. They are incorporated into redesigned, revalued coupon books. Bennett also won two Tony Awards in 1972 as co-director and choreographer of “Follies” and has staged the musical numbers for five other collected and destroyed. FNS said that food stamp recipients must spend their current food stamps by June 30 since retailers will not accept any old coupons after that date. Authorized food stamp stores will use the j%\ coupons for making change instead of the current 50 cent coupon and credit slips of 99cents or less for change under sl. Townsend was drafted and signed last summer by the Boston Red Sox. The Norfolk native was captain of the Dolphin ’73 championship team and was 'vUHET .jßmb t. V , Towny Towsend named all-conference in *72 and ’73. Drafted by the California Angels and Pittsburgh Pirates while at COA, the short stop chose to attend Campbell College on a baseball scholarship. He was named All-American last spring. After a year at Campbell, January lMg, Townaend signed with the Red Sox and waa assigned to their Class A Carolina f League team in Winston-Salem where he played last summer. “Towny is one of the finest athletes and young men I have ever coached,” Mansfield said." He has a great deal of natural ability and a tremendous desire to play, In my opinion, that's what it takes.” Townsend will report next month to the major league dub for spring training in Winter Haven, Fla. After training he will probably be sent to Boston’s Bawtucket Triple A dub in Rhode Island. Recaßing his college baseball days, Townsend said, “COA is where It all started for me. 1 was given the chance to play hare and always felt I could play.
