Farmers Urged Buy Wrih Caution RALEIGH—North Carolina farmers were warned today to exercise caution in purchasing pesticides by telephone, particularly weed control products (herbicides). The warning came from N. C. Commissioner of Agriculture •James A. Graham as a result of complaints received by the department’s Office of Consumer Services. “Farmers who purchase herbicides by telephone are at a decided disadvantage,’’ Commissioner Graham said. “They do not have the advantage of personally reviewing the product label nor do they have access to the personal service and instructions of dealing with a licensed dealer location. “Our calls indicate some producers have bought by phone only to learn later that the product was limited in use and higher in price than other comparable brands. One man even reported that he had been billed for a so-called free sample. William B. Buffaloe, chief of the Pesticide Section of the NCDA Pest Control Division, offered the following precautions to be exercised in the purchase of herbicides, either by telephone or from a farm supply store. 1- Determine active ingredients and the percentage of each. C.-Food stamp recipients would pay a standard 30 per cent of net income for their food stamp allotment, effective March 1, under an amendment to food stamp regulations proposed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The intention to propose this increase was announced in President Ford’s budget message of November 26. the proposal would mean an increased purchase requirement for all households except (1) certain households of eight or more persons, which have been paying 30 per cent of income and (2) those entitled to free food stamps under the law (one and two person households with net monthly income of less than S2O and all other households with income Recreation I Scoreboard I Midget League Basketball Standings EAST DIVISION W L Trail Blazers 5 2 Bucks 3 4 WEST DIVISION W L Supersonics 4 3 Lakers 2 5 Men's Basketball Standings W L National Guard ..2 0 Climb 1 0 Hospital 1 0 Walker 1 0 State Farm 11 Jaycees 11 Spedic 0 1 Texaco 0 2 U’P D 0 2 less than S3O). For example, a four person household with a monthly net income of $l5O after allowable deductions (eg. taxes withheld, shelter cost over 30 per cent of income, medical expense over $lO and child care expense) now pays s4l for $l5O in food stamps. Under the proposed formula, that household would pay $45 for its food stamp allotment. The proposal is in line with the provision of the Food Stamp Act specifying that the amount a household pays for its food stamps should represent a reasonable investment on the part of -the household, not to exceed 30 per cent of the household’s income. Current purchase requirements vary widely in percentage of income.
