Agent Anyone wanting to learn to use the pressure canner to can vegetables this summer may come to a workshop in the extension kitchen on Wednesday at 2 P.M. and May 7 and 14 at 2 P.M. This will give you a chance to learn how to use the canner. The extension office has three canners we loan to people to use. Remember that all low acid vegetables should be canned only in a pressure canner. These vegetables are beans, com, squash, limas, beets, etc. that should be canned under pressure - the only way you can get the heat to the center of the jar high enough to cook the food - to make it safe to eat. Remember too that you can get your pressure canner lid checked free at the Foods Festival in the Edenton Armory on April 29 and 30, 10 A.M. to 7 P.M. each day. Boswell, science teacher at Chowan High School, representing the Edenton- Chowan School System, attended the annual convention of the National Science Teachers Association in Los Angeles, Calif, March 20-24. Approximately 3,000 elementary, secondary, college and university teachers from all states, England, Canada, Mexico, Korea, and Southeast Asia made up the delegation. On the theme, “Man, Science: An Alliance of Hope,” the convention considered not only the techniques of science and educational methods, but many of the problems of the application of science in today’s society. In a unique format of three tracks, the convention offered programs on background science for teachers and educational methods, a series of programs devoted to the concerns of science education in large urban areas and social issues, and another series or track of programs devoted to science education for minority groups. As a participant, Mrs. Boswell took part in a series of workshops where new programs and materials were tried, and visited an extensive array of education exhibits to study and compare materials and equipment for science classes.
