Page 2-A Chowan ASCS News Peanut Allotments Peanut allotments may be transferred in 1978 by sale or lease to other farms in the Congress changes the present law, the acreage might be different from what it would have been under the law in effect for 1975. Agreements to transfer allotments must be fried in the ASCS office by April 1, 1976. April 1 is also the final date to release peanut allotments or to request additional acreage from released allotments. Lease and Transfer Os Flue-Cured Tobacco Tobacco lease and transfer agreements are being accepted at the county office and will continue through June 14. After June 14, transfers may be filed provided both the transferring and receiving farms have planted at least 50 per cent of effective allotment or the basic quota is 2000 pounds or less. 1976 Tobacco Market Designations The 1976 designation of tobacco markets will begin on March 1 and will end on April 2. This year, as in 1975, growers will say where they want to sell their tobacco. To be eligible for tobacco price support, markets must be designated (within a 100 mile radius of Edenton). At the same time, growers will also say how many cards they want and the poundage to be entered on each card. Lease and transfer agreements should be completed, if possible, before designating warehouses. This will prevent having to revise the designation form. Cotton Cotton can be released or requested now. Growers who do not intend to plant their 1976 cotton allotment should release it to the county committee by April 1. Both applications for release and requests should be made in writing. Forms are available at the county office and may be obtained by visiting, writing or calling the county office. Statewide planting intentions show that there will be a slight increase in cotton acreage for 1976 - from 55,000 acres in 1975 to 60,000 in 1976. State Committee Four new members have been named to the N. C. State ASC Committee. Secretary of Agriculture Earl L. Butz has named Robert L. Hill, Jr. of Oakboro, Grady S. Hunter of Boonville, Harry Robertson of Alexander County, and Homer B Tolbert of Iredell County to the N.C. State ASC Committee. John Robert Jones of Pembroke, who has been serving on the committee for some time, has been appointed chairman. Mr. Hill and Mr. Hunter have previously served on the State ASC Committee. Chowan ASCS offices will be closed on Monday, February 16th for the. George Washington’s Birthday Holiday. Services Sloted For Mrs. Hughes Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 3 P. M. for Mrs. Eunice Keeter Hughes, Route 3, Edenton. The services will be held in the chapel of Swindell- Bass Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Ledford in charge. Burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Hughes, 47, died Monday night in Chowan Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Merry Hill, she was the daughter of C. Norman and the late Mrs. Hilda Langdale Keeter. She was married to James Hughes, who also survives. Other survivors include two sons: Alan Hughes of Jacksonville, Ark.; and Jimmy Hughes of Edenton; three brothers: Calvin Keeter of Elizabeth City; Aubrey Keeter of Newport News, Va.; and Lewis Keeter of Charlotte; two sisters: Mrs. Francis Lane of Edenton; and Mrs. Mary Alice Bazemore of Windsor; and one grandchild. She was head of the finishing and inspecton department of George C. Moore Company in Edenton. METHODIST Topics Rev. E. L. Earnhardt of Edenton “ United Methodist Church has chosen “A Pure Heart” as topic for his sermon at the 11 A. M. service Sunday. His text is Matt *v 5:8.
