Executive Mousiou Renovated
North Carolina’s
Executive Mansion is the
home of the state’s first
family once again, following
the most extensive
renovation in the mansion’s
85-year history.
Hie renovation took 18
months and cost $845,000.
During the final seven
months of the renovation,
the First Family lived in a
rented house in northeast
Raleigh.
First Lady Pat
Holshouser emphasized that
the money appropiated by
the 1973 and 1974 session of
.the General Assembly was
sued for the renovation of
the building itself.
“This is a renovation, not
an interior decoration,”
Mrs. Holshouser said. “The
appropriations have been
put into things like
waterproofing, fireproofing,
electricity or new electrical
wiring, plumbing and a
central heating and cooling
system.
“These things will lead
toward the preservation of
the building for the next 85
to 100 years,” she explained.
When the renovation was
begun, the mansion was
found to be in sound overall
condition, with most of the
deterioration due to water
damage.
In cases where items
within the mansion had to be
replaced because of water
damage or other
deterioration, great care
was taken to see that the
replacements resembled the
original decorations as
much as possible.
Mrs. Holshouser cited two
examples of reusing the
mansion’s structural
material rather than buying
new material.
“In redoing those areas
where some of the
woodwork had deteriorated,
we are using the wood that
we found when we started
taking things down in the
building.' In addition, the
briekthat the state removed
from the Old Blount Street
was used 1 .take a modern,
functional kitchen with an
appearance that is in
keeping with the
‘gingerbread’ architectural
style.”
Hie only visible evidence
of the renovation to the
exterior of the building is a
new enclosed fire escape on
the southeast comer of the
Building.
In replacing carpets and
drapery in the mansion,
Mrs. Holshouser turned to
the state’s textile firms for

assistance.
“We are trying to keep the
mansion as an example of
North Carolina products,
since our state is right in the
heart of the world’s textile
and furniture industries,”
she said.
“We want the new
furnishings that are
required to very clearly
depict North Carolina
products very much the
same as Gov. Jarvis did
when the building was first
envisioned,” she said.
T. J. Jarvis, Governor of
North Carolina from 1879 to
1885, made a strong effort
toward constructing the
mansion at 200 North Blount
Street. However, the
mansion was not completed
during Gov. Jarvis’ term,
and Gov. D. G. Fowle
became the first governor to
occupy the state’s
Executive Mansion in 1891.
