Thursday, February 26,1976 Know Your Social Security By Lee Wallio Field Representative People who didn’t sign up for Medicare medical insurance when they first became eligible or who have cancelled the protection once can enroll now through March 31 at any social security office. Medicare medical insurance is offered automatically to people who 1 reach 65 and are eligible for social security benefits-and to disabled people under 65 who have been entitled to monthly social security disability benefits for 24 consecutive months or more. Nine out of 10 people eligible are enrolled in the program. But some people decline the protection when they’re first eligible. And some sign up once and cancel later. They can enroll in the first 3 months of any year. The medical insurance helps pay doctor bills and other medical expenses and is the voluntary part of Medicare, funded by individual premiums and Federal general revenues. The basic premium is $6.70 a month through June 1976. It will be increased to $7.20 for the 12-month period starting in July 1976. People who decline Medicare medical insurance and delay signing up for more than a year pay a higher premium. People who sign up and cancel later can re-enroll only once. The medical insurance supplements Medicare hospital insurance. Hospital insurance is funded by social security contributions from workers, employers, and self-employed people. People 65 and over who are not eligible for social security benefits can apply at any social security office and get Medicare hospital insurance by paying a premium. The basic premium is S4O a month through June 1976. It will be increased to $45 a month for the period July 1976 through June 1977. People who buy hospital insurance must also sign up for the medical insurance. People who have worked long enough under social security can get Medicare hospital and medical insurance for themselves and their family if they have permanent kidney failure. Medicare is administered by the Social Security Administration, and agency of the U. S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The Elizabeth City social security office is at 111 Jordan Plaza. The phone number is 338-2161. Poland China Show And Sale Called Success The Southeastern Poland China Show and Sale held January 30-31 at Courtland, Va., was a real success. Seventy-five per cent of those sold stayed in Virginia and most all the entries were purchased by commercial producrers. The Poland China Records Association would like to thank the Virginia Swine specialists, Dr. Charlie Cooper, L. Barnes Allen and J. Henry Carter, Jr. for their outstanding job of helping make the show and sale successful. Dr. Bob Jones, judge of the show, from N.C.S. ‘emphasized the need for sound, free moving breeding stock and he selected those for his champions. The judging contest was well attended. Randall Updike, Virginia Department of Agriduture, as chairman of the type committee, (fid a real fine job of conducting the contest and getting people involved in die show.
