Page 2-B Wrestling Team Places The John A. Holmes High School wrestling team, led by Coach Gil Burroughs, has had a busy two weeks to end the 1975-1976 wrestling season. On February 16 the Aces took part in the Northeast 3- A Conference Tournament in Williamston. Wrestling teams from Ahoskie, Williamston, Tarboro, Washington, Plymouth and Edenton participated, with Plymouth finishing as overall team champion, followed closely for second by the Edenton Aces. Individual finalists for the Aces were John Norris, 198 lb. weight class, first place; Kenny Bond, 141 weight class, Donald Rankin, 148 weight class, Raymond Brown, 158 weight class, Mike Brown, 188 weight class, second place; and Mark Drew, 101 weight class, Alphonso White, 108 weight class, Fred Lassiter, 129 weight class, Haywood Bond, 135 weight class, and James Jones, unlimited weight class, third place. On February 20 and 21, the Aces team traveled to the Sectional Wrestling Tournament held at J. H. Rose High School in Greenville. This two-day tournament is elimination competition, with the first and second place winners in each weight class being eligible for the state finals to be held in Winston-Salem on February 27-28. A total of 19 schools were present and D. H. Conally High School was overall team champion for this tournament. Again the Aces did very well with individual finalists. Fred Lassiter, 119 weight class and Mike Brown, 170 weight class, finished in first place; John Norris, 185 weight class, finished second; and Haywood Bond, 129 weight class, finished third. Each of •hese finalists received a medal and Lassiter, and v orris will be going to the state finals in Winston- Salem this week. As a whole, the Edenton wrestling teun has had a good year. Coach Burroughs has much to be proud of, and should be congratulated for his leadership and training. It should be mentioned that all of this year’s team are freshmen, sophomores and juniors, so the 1976-77 season should see a strong, experienced Edenton Aces wrestling team, worthy of community support. jly Joe Boyd Evangelist Boyd Guest Speaker Evangelist Joe Boyd will be the guest speaker for a series of meetings next week at Immanuel Baptist Church in Edenton. The Evangelist was born in Jacksonville, Tex. and now makes his home in Corpus Christi, Tex. Mr. Boyd was saved at the age of 12 and called to preach at age 27. The one time All-American tackle for Texas A&M, has pastored three churches before entering the field of evangelism. He is on the Board of Evangelists of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Ind., conducting over 30 revivals a year, and his work takes him from coast-to-coast. Services will begin each evening at 7:30 Monday through Sunday. Special singing will be presented by the church choirs and quartet. The pastor extends a cordial welcome to all to attend.
