Thursday, February as, 1976 lafornaats Aid Law Officers , 4 Sheriff Troy Toppin this •week released the following information regarding f«:ent activity which indicates increased interest on the part of citizens in assisting law enforcement officers: On Thursday, Sheriff Julian Broughtan of the Perquimans County Sheriff’s Department Received valuable information from an r : informant that a certain subject had been in Hertford and had stolen a checkbook. Same had forged some of the checks and tried to cash .them at one of the Hertford banks, but was refused. The informant then advised Sheriff Broughtan that the subject would be coming to .Edenton to try and cash * these checks. At that time Sheriff Broughtan called me and gave me the information on the checks and had me to be on the lookout for same, m At approximately 1:45 P.M. I received another call that the three subjects had left Hertford. I was given a description of them, the car they were driving, and the bank they’d be going to. I then contacted Edenton Police Department, gave them the information, and .had. them send an officer to Y.Northside Shopping Center to watch for the car. Officer F. M. Parker was assigned. Officer Sonny Jones and I parked a block away from : the bank. At 2:10 P.M. 'it dtficer Parker reported the *: car had passed Northside and that he was keeping it ; : under serveillance. It came ■jjjF: within sight of us (Jones and . myself) and parked in the : parking lot next to the bank. :Two subjects got out of the ' car and went over to the ' bank; however, the bank had not re-opened at that lime, so both subjects went back across the street from ihe bank and talked for approximately 15 minutes. •». The. two subjects then .. went back to the car, got h); and left headed north out of Edenton. At that time, the Police and I stopped the vehicle and found the stolen checks in possession of one >f the subjects. An arrest was made, due __to the information we from a concerned “citizen.
