Arosad Chowan C|jmty Farm By R. M. Thompson County Ext. Chairman > - With the warm weather tbit we have had there is a possiblity of aphids building up on small grain, gardens and shrubbry. One of the best ways to control aphids is for you to spray Malathion at the rate of lVi pints of 57 percent EC to the acre. For the material to really be effective air temperature should be above 55 degrees. We would certainly suggest that you check to see if aphids are attacking your plants and if you do find them in susbstantial quantities, spray them. For those of you that have had problems in getting stands of peanuts in the past, there is a material on the market this year that yoitfnight like to add to your v seed. The name of it is r sTitavax. It is sold as a wettable powder and we are suggesting that you use 3 oz. to the 100 lbs. of seed. The best time for this material to Jbe applied is when the seed )»re being treated as you can get a much better coverage. We believe that this gnaterial will help the emergence of peanuts if it is applied properly. This is especially true if the peanuts have a tendancy to be a little weak in germination. One of the things that we Should do to control Southern Stem Rot in 1976 is deep plowing and fully covering old stubble to prevent a build up of this disqpse. We should cultivate flat* to avoid throwing soil f projjnd the plant and have a goqj leaf spot control to present leaf shedding. Also good rotation over the coming years with cotton, cord, grain sorghum and small grain will help to present this build up. .Chemical control of Southern Stem Rot will be much more effective if you Usejthese cultural practices yeafly.
