*S«ctron C County Students To Witness Reenactment Os Famous Murder Trial When witnesses stand before the “judge” in Chowan County April 8 at 9:30 A.M. and swear to “tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” ninth graders from John A. Holmes and Chowan High schools will be looking on. This will be but one of many* activities in which Chowan County students will participate during the Bicentennial Arts Festival in Eden ton, April 8-11. The participants in the losgsage Arts Boost Careers At Chowan High School grades seven through 10 are taking a look at careers in ecology, acting, and the ministry. Studying careers through language arts has been part of their school curriculum this year. Classes are involved with activities in acting, such as learning to pantomime and how to articulate while speaking. Mrs. Rascoe’s ninth and 10th grade classes are looking forward to a theatrical make-up demonstration from Mrs. Sandra Boyce, drama teacher at Holmes High ■•‘School. Did you know that today Americans, with only 7 per cent of the world’s population, consume almost 50 per cent of the earth’s industrial raw materials? Long’s eighth Grade class is learning such facts. They have discovered new terms such as landfill, composit heap, ocean dumping, and recycling. Now they know why it is important to practice good ecology. Members of the seventh and ninth grades were surprised to learn that it is helpful that a minister be a good bookkeeper, repairman, administrator, counselor, and musician. Mrs. Copeland’s seventh des were surprised to learn that it is helpful that a minister be a good bookkeeper, repairman, administrator, counselor, and musician. Mrs. Copeland’s seventh Grade has been researching religious affilia tions of our com munity as well as the different faiths of the world. Mrs. Rascoe’s ninth Grade enjoyed a tour of Ballards Bridge Baptist Church given by Rev. George Cooke, pastor. Each student will research, write, discuss, report and by the experience of learning will be better informed of the demands and rewards of, maybe, a future career. EHRINGHAUS 335-2915 |_^T_|| * Sponsored by the ' Department of Public i Instruction, the Carolina • Theater Company of i Winston-Salem is recreating i the trial for Ninth Grade students across the state. To add to the authenticity of the Edenton, North Carolina, Thursday, April 1, 1976 ' drama, the productions are being staged in county courthouses. The play, “The Death of Wingler”, is based on the death of a Wilkes County woman in 1893. Ves Wingler, her husband, told s authorities the woman died when she fell .from a hay loft. Twenty-nine years : later, a neighbor came s forward to confess that ' Wingler had admitted to , him that he had killed his 1 wife with a pickaxe. Wingler was convicted by a jury and sentenced to life in prison. But the ninth graders will serve as the jury and make their own decision about Wingler’s guilt or innonce based on the evidence presented. “Ninth graders were selected to witness the reenactment because they have recently completed both North Carolina and World Hisotry courses,” according to James R. Hall, director of the Department S»4ion C of Public Instruction’s Division of Cultural Arts. “One of the most valuable lessons the students can learn from history,” he added, “is how our eburts have worked through the years.”
