THE CHOWAN HERALD Legion Auxiliary Selects Three Delegates To Attend Girls’ State Nan Stutzman, Florence Berryman and Rita Saunders have been chosen by the American Legion Auxiliary to attend Girl’s State. The experience is held on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Nan, who will represent John A. Holmes High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Blair Stutzman, Country Club Drive. Chowan Academy’s representative is Florence Berryman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Berryman of Hobbsville. Rita, representative of Chowan. High School, is the daughter of Mrs. Eunice J. Saunders, Route 1, Tyner. Nan is one of three chief marshals at Holmes this year. She is a member of the National Honor Society, is president of the Junior Calss and vice president of the Biology Club. She was Junior Editor of the Annual, won the DAR Good Citizens Award and is a member of the ESAA Student Advisory Committee, among other activities. She is a member of the Edenton United Methodist Church, the Baptist Youth Choir and Handbell Choir. Florence, a rising senior at Chowan Academy, is also president of the Junior Class, and a member of the National Honor Society. She is a representative to the Student Government, a member of the newspaper and annual staffs and participated in basketball and softball. Rita is vice president of the Eastern District of North Carolina Student Council Association for 1976- 77, is a member of the Page 15-B French Club, Annual Staff, Ecology Club, Monogram Club, vice president of the Library Club and on the Student Advisory Council of Edenton-Chowan Schools. She attended the Mars Hill Leadership School last year. She is a member of Greater Welches Chapel Baptist Church. > News From Merry Hill Miss Ellen Pruden spent last weekend with friends, before entering the summer school at Methodist College at Fayetteville on Tuesday. She will attend both sessions at the college during this summer. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smithwick spent several days at Newport News with Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Bailey and daughters, Stacey and April. They accompanied the Bailey family on a trip to Hillsboro, N. C. for the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Jake Belch, Mrs. Smith wick’s brother. Also Mr. and Mrs. Bete Belch of Edenton were their guests for Saturday and Sunday. —O— Mrs. J. W. White spent last week at Newport News with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Hopkins. They had a daughter born May 27. She was the former, Miss Carol White of Merry Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Chesley White left last week for Florida, to spend some time with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Graves and daughter. —O — Mr. and Mrs. Charles Keeter and son Eddie, of Hampton spent last weekend at their home here. —o— Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smithwick spent Tuesday at Harrellsville and Ahoskie, with Mrs. Bob House and children, Lynn and Jennifer. —o— Born to Mr. and Mrs. J. Britt Smithwick Jr. of Tupelo, Miss, a son, Brian Charles on May 23. Mr. Smithwick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Smithwick Sr. of Merry Hill. —O— Jennifer House of Harrellsville spent Thursday with her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smithwick. Mr. and Mrs. L. I. Bowen, Sr. of Windsor, visited his sister Mrs. Ethel Winbome, Friday and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bowen of Windsor visited his aunt Sunday afternoon. —<>— Mr and Mrs. A. J. Lawrence entertained at their home at Midway on Sunday at a dinner for, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Smith and children, Maria and Kelly of Greenville and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lawrence and children Jackie and Jason of Edenton. —(>- Mrs. Jane Lawrence Smith of Greenville daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Lawrenceof Merry Hill and wife of Archie T. Smith was recently invited in the National Honorary Society of Gamma Beta Phi Society at the E C. University, Greenville. She was out of school for six years and then re-entered and has one more year at E. C. University. She is the mother of two children, Maria and Kelly and they live at Greenville. Rachel Ann Holmes Mr. and Mrs. George B. Holmes, Jr., of Tyner, announce the birth of a daughter, Rachel Ann, on May 14 at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Holmes is the former Debbie Weiss of Edenton.
