Edenton, has been selected as the delegate from the Chowan Future * Farmers of America * Chapter to attend the 1976 1 Resource Conservation *■ Workshop in Raleigh, June , 14-18. Hie workshop will be held on the campus of N. C. 6 State University. > As the local delegate to i the workshop, Steve is being r sponsored by Peoples Bank 1 and Trust Company and the Chowan Conservation District Supervisors. Steve, a rising junior at , Chowan High School, has E. S. White, vo-ag teacher at * Chowan, as FFA chapter 1 advisor. According to White, Steve is very active in the FFA program. He is also on the baseball team at Chowan, a member of the Rocky Hock Baptist Church Youth Choir and serves as president of his Sunday School Class. The workshop, an annual event, is sponsored by the N.' C. Chapter of the Soil Conservation Society of America, the N. C. Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, and the State Soil and Water Conservation Commission. According to Lloyd C. Bunch, chairman of the local board of district supervisors, the week-long course is held for high school students and is designed to educate and impress upon a selected group of young men and women the importance of conservation and natural resource development. Crake Navy Aviation Structural Mechanic Third Class George W.. Martin, whose wife Jacqueline is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hall of- Edenton, has recently returned from a six-month deployment from the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean aboard the USS Independence. He and his crewmembers participated in allied exercises involving Naval and Air Forces from more than 15 different nations. The USS Independence is currently stationed at the Naval Shipyard, Norfolk, Va. for repairs. A 1970 graduate of Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington, D. In addition to the conservation land treatment measures necessary to protect and improve .the land and water resources of the watershed, the project includes about 17.3 miles of channel work. Total cost of the project is estimated at $714,000, of which the federal contribution will be about $288,000. Local interests will provide about $426,000 including landrights and will operate and maintain the project when it is completed, Congressman Jones said. The project will return $1.70 in benefits for every dollar of project costs, he added. Federal assistance will be provided by the Soil Conservation Service and the Forest Service of ,the U. S.
