HOOTS ANNIVERSARIES—This week marks the beginning of my seventh year as Director of the Pettigrew Regional Library. It was on September Ist of 1970 that I moved into the new office of the Regional headquarters in the recently enlarged Washington County Library building. My first column for the local newspaper appeared soon afterward. Every year since then I have explained the origin of my by-line. As a graduate of Rice University it was only natural that I began a collection of owls since that is the school mascot. When I was a Girl Scout leader, I adopted Gray Owl as my camp name since my hair was prematurely gray. So when I became a library director, I decided to share some of my thoughts on libraries, librarians, books and things (the good and the not-so-good) with the hope that it would call attention to libraries in general and the Pettigrew Regional Library system in particular - and only incidentally to The Gray Owl. Speaking of owls, I am assembling as many of them as I can spare to put on display in the exhibit space at Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library in Edenton. Since many of my owls are useful items which I use daily, I will miss them. My home and my office will seem bare for a while but it will be fun to see them all together for one. By Nellie M. Sanders Director reunion of my high school clqss of ’4l. Since I had already made one trip to Houston this year, I decided not to attend. However, I sent the money to pay for a class directory out of sheer curiosity (a characteristic of a dyed-in-the-wool reference librarian). Since I attended four different high schools and the last one was a huge one, I was not too well acquainted with my classmates despite the relative ease with which I meet new people. According to the anniversary direc tory, there were 727 mem bers in our graduation class, less than half of whom were men(3s6). Os the 371 women listed, 250 had acquired an MRS in front of their names - there was no way to tell how many of the males got married! No addresses were available for 144 of us, but the information on the other 80 per cent of the class was interesting. Fifty-four classmates were listed as deceased - less than 10 per cent. The majority of the class stayed in Texas (468) and most of those in Houston (360). Only 61 of us left Texas to settle in 25 dif ferent states and I am the only one listed in North Carolina. Unfortunately, there was no other information in the directory such as professions, number of children or grandchildren, honors, etc. The sad thing to me was how very few of them I remembered. Maybe it was because I was the youngest member of my class, having skipped two grades, and worked after school instead of par ticipating in extra curricular activities.
