Too Deep Too Bad—
We’re in the midst of winter
planting of shrubs. A word
of caution: One of the
easiest ways to reduce
future growth of shrubs, or
even kill them, is to plant
them deeper than they
originally grew in the
nursery. Almost all common
ornamentals can be af
fected. Example: Too deep
a planting of azaleas and
camellias is a major reason
for poor response. When
placed too far beneath the
soil line, some shrubs
produce a root system on the
underground stem at a
higher and more desirable
level. If the plant succeeds it
will survive and eventually
grow at a normal rate. It is
possible to re-set shrubs at
proper level. Do this now,
While plants are dormant.
When planting shrubs, be
sure to firm soil in bottom of
the planting hole. This helps
prevent sinking. Always
plant so that the top of the
ball of earth is level with
stirrounding soil.
Car vs Shrub—On those
cold mornings when shrubs
are frozen, take care not to
let your car’s warm exhaust
blow into nearby frozen
shrubs. The resultant
alternating thawing and
freezing can damage or kill
shrubbery planted near the
driveway. It’s safer to back
the car awav from your
shrubbery while the car
warms up.
Mulch Before Freeseo—lt
usually is advisable to
mulch shrubs and some
perennials before hard
freezes are in the forecast.
