EDENTON’S PAST— W.C. Redden of Cheriton, Va., has a collection of old.pictures of Edenton, Chowan County and the
Albemarle Area of Northeastern North Carolina. Through the Edenton Chamber of Commerce, he has agreed to share
them with The Chowan Herald. From time to time, as Redden agrees, this newspaper will reproduce these pictures. The
two shown above, made in 1888, are of the railroad station as well as boats coming into the county dock. This newspaper
greatly apprerist** Redden’s desire to share these photographs with our readers as we approach the Biennial Pilgrimage
of Colonial Edenton and Countryside.

David B. Stansel, center
director, said an audit
showed 19,303 persons
participated in 197
educational courses and
meetings from the day the
center was opened last June
through December 31.
Those 197 gatherings
ranged from business and
professional short courses to
energy crisis conferences to
health programs. Non
academic meetings covered
topics as diverse as
municipal waterworks

scientific convention.

nation.”
Turner noted that with the
“modern, well-equipped and
professionally staffed
facility, the full resources of
North Carolina’s land-grant
university can be utilized for
citizens working in a wide
variety of fields.”
Hie center was built with
funds initiated by a SIOO,OOO
gift from the Homemakers
Association of North
Carolina in 1966 and an
appropriation of almost $5-
million by the 1971 General
Assembly.
The estimated economic
importance to the state is
partially indicated by the
conservative projection of
plmost sl-mi]lion generated
in the City of Raleigh by out
of-city residents attending
the meetings at McKimmon

Center.
The largest single con
ference conducted at the
center during the first seven
months of operations was
the first to use the center
after its opening—the
American Dairy Science
Association which drew
1,600 persons from across
the state and nation and
scientists from around the
world.
Several other meetings
attracted more than 500
persons.
Stansel said enrollment in
the short courses and the
number of courses and
meetings would rise during
1977.
McKimmon Center also
serves as administrative
headquarters for the NCSU
“night college” in which
3,840 students registered
this year.
