FSB Benefits Are Available Edenton Federal Sup plemental Benefits (FSB) are again available to eligible, unemployed workers in North Carolina, Mrs. Alice W. Bond, manager of the Em ployment Security Com mission’s Job Service office here announced today. Funded entirely by federal monies, FSB provides an additional payment period to eligible workers who have exhausted their state unemployment benefits. “The FSB program is completely tied to state insured unemployment rates,’’ said Mrs. Bond. “When the rate of insured, unemployed workers reaches 5 per cent or more during any 13 week period, then FSB triggers on.” North Carolina’s insured jobless rate reached the 5 per cent level with the week aiding January 29. The first payable week in the state’s additional FSB period will be the week ending February 19. Mrs. Bond stated that the additional FSB period is slated to last but a short time. Mrs. Bond referred to federal legislation calling for-the expiration of FSB payments in all states on March 31, unless they are further extended by Congress. FSB was initially available in North Carolina from January, 1975, through October 31, 1976, when the program first phased out. During that period, more than $63-million in benefits was paid to eligible claimants. At Mrs. Price’s request, Ashley reinforced and supplemented her fourth grade students’ social studies and health unit on “Disaster Strikes” in several ways. Pinpointing the Edenton Baptist Church, the County Office Building, and Swain Elementary School as shelters, Ashley informed students of provision which would be needed and necessary precautions to be taken in the event of nuclear fallout and during hurricanes. While explaining that many accidents occur through carelessness and preventable, hazardous conditions at home and at school, Ashley suggested ways in which students could help decrease ac cidents and iniated a clean up campaign contest for the students. He also distributed “Family Guide to Emergency Health Care” booklets to each student. Challenged by a contest Clothes Closet Bonk of North Corolino Building (SECOND FLOOR) MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS 2 P. M. TO 5 P. M. (Nominal Charge For All Items) SPONSORED BY CHURCHES OF EDENTON and stimulated by tbe knowledge of a prize for the winner, for three weeks these fourth graders scavenged the school campus, collecting sharp and dangerous objects which could cause minor or major accidents. At the end of the time period, Ashley returned to the class and presented Willie Rankins with a box of Whitman’s candy for collecting the most dangerous objects. In the end, every child was rewarded for his effort to make conditions at school less hazardous. Since all children participated, Ashley brought a larger box of candy for the whole class to share.
