ECU Graduates 2,836 May 29 GREENVILLE - Degrees were conferred upon 2,836 graduates by East Carolina University May 29 at ECU’s 68th annual commencement. Seven of the graduates were from Chowan County. Included were: Patrick Michael Flynn, Route 1, Edenton, BS in English; Rebecca Copeland Hobbs, Route 1, Tyner, BS in nursing; Michael Abner Covington, 105 West Church Street, BS in industrial technology; Marion Bowden Hassell of Edenton, BS in early childhood education; John Scott Barrow, 823 Cabarrus Street, BS in math; Joyce Ann Boone Cole of Edenton, masters in supervision; .and Roy Ronald Bass, Route 1, Edenton, masters in lear ning disabilities. Death Claims Mrs. Lewis Mrs. Louene Paige DeVol Lewis, 46, Route 2, Cape Colony, Edenton, the wife of James E. Lewis, died Saturday afternoon in Chowan Hospital after an illness of six months. A native of Welston, Ohio, she was a daughter of Mrs. Grace Long Devol of Ohio, and the late Harold DeVol. Other survivors include four daughters: Misses LuAnn, Belinda, Kimberly and Lori Lewis, and one son James E. Lewis, 11, all of the home. A funeral service was held Monday at 3 P. M. in the chapel of Swindell-Bass Funeral Home by Rev. William Tyndall and Rev. Donald Young. Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were L. F. Amburn, Jr., John A. Mitchener, Jr., Jack Habit, Roy Harrell, Bill Griswold, and N. J. George, with Elliott Belch an honorary pallbearer. The first baseball game be tween two organized teams, according to World Book Encyclopedia, took place in Hoboken, N.J. on June 19, 1846 between the New York Nine and the Knickerbocker Baseball Club of New York. TO GIVE AND GET Golfing Fishiiig Skiing Picnicking Mother Os J. E. Debnam, Jr., Dies SNOW HILL-Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Birdie Lee Speight Debnam, mother of J. E. Debnam, Jr., of Edenton. She died Thursday in Snow Hill at the age of 97. She was the retired owner and editor of the Standard Laconic newspaper, having taken over the management HONORED—Mrs. Alice Kincy, above, was honored recently at the N. C. State Beautician and Cosmetologist Association Convention held in High Point. She was named President ot the Year. She organized a local chapter and it was named to the honor roll for its charitable contributions. Her shop, Alicia s Beauty Salon, is located six miles south of Hertford. Biking Hiking Commuting Playing Tennis of the Greene County Weekly in 1934 upon the death of her husband, J. E. Debnam. She retired in 1962 but continued writing a column for the newspaper until 1968. Besides her son, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. C.M.
