Local Library News Ball Major
Don’t forget, too, the
summer art classes, being
taught in the Library by
Mrs. Vivian Taft, local art
teacher, and the continuing
ballet classes under the
direction of Marsha Gordon.
For any further in
formation about any of the
above programs, call the
library 482-4112. We love to
talk to you!
Two is always better than
one—and three is fantastic!
At least we at Shepard-
Pruden Memorial Library
think so as we look at our
display case and wall and
the counters where three of
our current exhibits are
housed.
You can almost hear the
bees hum and the crickets
chirp as you view the
welding display done by
students of the Chowan High
School welding class in our
case. The students have
taken ordinary, mundane
things like sparkplugs and
tin cans and from these have
made an intriguing bee hive,
complete with a swarm of
“sparkplug” bees, an
aquarium, lovely bouquets
of “tin” flowers, a large
silver airplane, and an
unusual balancing bar, as
well as a spirtely cricket.
The students, under the
direction of Emmett P.
Jones, have created a truly,
unique collection.
Mrs. Vivian Taft’s gifted
and talented Fifth Grade
class from Swain School
have provided us with
another one of our “three”
The students have
created the most lovable
free-standing animals from
wire, gauze and paper
mache. We have all had a
good time trying to decide
which animal is our
favorite. Which will be
yours? An elegant giraffe, a
friendly bear, a large gray
elephant, a charging bull, or
possibly the humpty
dumpty camel with the long
beard? Come see and make
your choice.
And last but certainly not
least we have a display of
large modernistic works

Did you like the spiders,
kids, from story time
Tuesday morning? They
weren’t the least bit scary—
or were they? We’re looking
forward to seeing more of
our “old kids also on
Tuesday morning from
10:30 to 11 o’clock as we
have arranged a story time
for second through sixth
graders separately from our
usual story time for our
little folks.
In connection with our
summer program which
many of you have asked
about, please do note that
beginning June 15 through
August 15 we will be
sponsoring a reading
program for youngsters
through the Eighth Grade.
For every five books each
youngster reads, and can
tell us about, we’ll award
him or her a certificate good
for a hamburger from
Hardee’s.
If anyone should read 25
books, they’ll get a token for
one of Hardee’s bigger
burgers so not only can
you fill your mind with
knowledge this summer,
kids, you can also fill your
tummies with good food
just by reading and
reporting to us on the books
you’ve read and enjoyed.
By the way, Tuesdays will
also be the day to report on
the books you’ve been
reading. We’ll keep track of
them here at the Library for
you.
