Thursday, Ady *. W7 Cattl* Producers > ; Return Favorable Referendum Vote , “By an over-whelming 86.7 per cent North Carolina cattle producers returned a favorable vote on the Beef Referendum,” reports Charles E. Messer, president of the N. C. Cat tlemen’s Association. “Due to the concerted efforts of the N. C. Beef Development Taskforce and the county' extension livestock agents,, plus countless other, well' over die required fifty per cent of the registered voters returned to cast ballots on the Referendum.” Official registration in North Carolina was 3,045 cattle producers. Os those who registered, 1,037 returned to vote, 1,080 in favor of the referendum, 277 against. In Chowan County, there were 15 beef producers registered, nine of which voted, all in favor of the referendum. The Beef Referendum is a self-help program, financed by voluntary collections from cattle producers. “If the beef business is going to get more profitable, producers themselves are going to have to make it more profitable. The Beef - Referendum provides the tools - promotion, research, foreign market develop ment, marketing in-; formation - to do the job,” Messer said. “The beef industry’s present research and in formation effort is inadequate by any standard. We spend a small fraction of what many other, smaller commodity groups spend. The referendum, if passed nationally, will generate the S3O to S4O million a year needed to solve our problems and strengthen our markets,” said Messer. 1 4-Week Series t On Channel 2 r-r. • k! A fourteen week series of patient education programs will be aired from July 30th through Ocotober 29th on ti»e University of Nprth Carolina Television Net work. The program which will be seen state-wide and will be on each Saturday from 6:00 to 6:30 P.M. The series was produced by the American Diabetes Association of Minnesota and is being sponsored by the North Carolina Affiliate of the American Diabetes Association as part of its statewide patient and public education program. John Laurents, Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association of North Carolina stressed the importance of Diabetes patient education. “From a three year study of diabetes in North Carolina it was determined that 71 per cent were in poor control of their disease. A basic lack of understanding is widespread among people ; with diabetes as well as the general public. Diabetes today is the third leading cause of death by disease in this country and current evidence seems to indicate that good control of the disease can prevent or delay long term complications. Because the disease has a cumulative effect over many years, most diabetics fail to recognize the im portance of property un derstanding and managing their disease until its too late. Personal motivation is vital to achieving a measurable improvement in the health status of the - state’s 350,000'psrsons with Diabetes.
