Library Doings Guess what we’ve got in the Library now? From now until November 18 as a matter of fact. We really do mean guess what! Guess what the purpose of our “mystery object” in the display case is and win a sixteen volume set of American Heritage History of the United States. This is our way of celebrating national Children’s Book Week which is in November. One of our valued patrons is giving us a gift of the brand new set of encyclopedias so that we can offer it as a prize to the student who guesses what the purpoe of our mysterious object is. The object was in general use when our country was founded. So for any student elementary, high scool, college or university within fifty miles of Edenton who wants to enter our contest come in and look at the object and try to guess what its use was. Write the purpose, your name, ad dress, and phone number on a plain sheet of paper, put it in a sealed envelope and drop it in our “Guess Box.” The contest closes Saturday, November 12 and the winner will be announced during National Children’s Book Week. We’re sure the high school students who are working so hard on the history of Edenton will be trying to guess what this object was used for. Join oar contest now!!! The Library is especially pleased to announce that it has been presented another beautiful memorial book. This book was presented by die Garden of Eden Club in memory of Mrs. Leila Budkng Wood. The book entitled Winter Birds of the Carelinas and Nearby States by Michael A. Godfrey, was published in Winston-Salem and the photography is extremely breath-taking. The edition discusses such birds as vultures, hawks, falcons, woodpeckers, and gulls. Also the book goes into detail describing the in teractions of birds and their environments, physical characteristics, range of birds, and their habitats and winter activities. Yes, this book is truly exquisite and will be a valued addition in our library. Extreme thanks and gratitude are extended to the Garden of Eden Club for this memorial book. Library Doings “Every picture tells a story —” and this month at Shepard-Pruden our display wall is covered with the excellent photography of Mr. Allan Asbell of Chowan County. These photos are just a sample of some of the beautiful work Mr. Asbell has done depicting wed dings, basketball teams, historic sites (especially of Edenton), and sunsets on the Chowan River and surrounding picturesque countryside of our very educational and beautiful town and county. Yes, Mr. Asbell is an artist and we do hope that you will come in and enjoy this excellent display for the month of October. But if stars, planets and moon gazing is your cup of tea then we can supply the astronomer at heart with Mr. Quintet Rountree’s exhibit of astronomical books, magazines, and last but by no means least —a fantastic telescope on display. If you dream of far away places, planets, and possibly even people (you Star War fans should perk up at that) then come on down to the library and see this magnificent exhibition. » If you wish to study men you mist not neglect to mix the society of children. -Jesse Torrey.
