The Gray Owl Says
By Nellie M. Sanders
Director, Pettigrew
Regional Library
An announcement of the
vacancy, to be listed in the
State Library’s Jobline and
the Public Library
Development Section’s
News Flash as well as with
the Employment Security
Commission was authorized
at the Board meeting held
Monday night in Tyrrell
County Public Library. All
inquiries for the position of
Library Director are to be
addressed to the Chairman
of the Board, Tom H.
Shepard, Post Office Box
449, Edenton, N.C. 27932.
Since the position of
regional director is covered
by a Personnel Grant from
State Aid to Public
Libraries, the Rules and
Regulations for the
distribution of that state
money apply to the
qualiifcations for em
ployment. The pertinent
requirement is “The Chief
Librarian, or Director, of
the County or Regional
Libary must hold a valid'
public librarian certificate
and have had successful
experience as a public
librarian or administrator
confirmed by written
references from previous
employers (Library
Board).” The first part of
this rule means that the
applicant must have a
master’s degree in Library
Science from an approved
graduate school.
SCREECHES
FOR THE LAST TIME—
One thing about moving that
has always been a source
ofnostalgiaformeisthenum
ber of things that you do “for
the last time”. The meeting
of the Library Board of
Trustees on Monday will no
doubt be my last time to
participate with that par
ticular group of people in
that very important way.
Since the governing body of
this multi-county region, a
“public authority”, is the
board of trustees appointed
by -<he County •‘‘CotiF
missicmers, those Twelve
people are my bosses. We
have met regularly four ,
times a year and several j
times for special meetings. I
Some of our meetings !
have been long and at times i
the deliberations have
seemed a bit tedious but the
overriding concerns of the
board members have been
the same as mine - to
provide the best possible
library service to the
citizens of the area we
serve. This area is fortunate
that the founders of this
library region provided such
a good basic organization
plan that the Pettigrew
Regional Library has
followed an orderly pattern
of growth. And there is no
reason to suppose that it will
not continue to improve.
