Division of Social Services (then the Department of Public Welfare) to establish standards and to provide our rules and regulations to inspect and license adult group homes. Dr. Eller said, “During the intervening years, many improvements and much upgrading have taken place. Scattered all over the state are approximately 900 nomes ranging in size from a capcity of two to 151. “The administrators of these homes and the social workers who work with than have long been aware that keeping people active and interested is to keep them happy and well for a longer period of time. They are also aware of the im portance of motivating individuals to continue an active and fulfilling life.” With this in mind, there has been a great interest in establishing a meaningful program of activities so that residents of these homes will be happy, active and interested. And so was born the Activity Coordinator from Homes for the Aged and Infirm and Family Care Homes Program. By definition a home for the aged and infirm is a facility which provides sheltered care to six or more adults who because of age or disability require some personal services along with room and board to assure their safety and comfort. Among the numerous activities that the trained activity coordinator should be familiar with are balloon volleyball, parchesi, pup petry, bingo, gardening, shuffleboard and tid dlywinks. Activities for the physically disabled and confused individual could be bird watching, indoor gardening, bean bag toss, singing, television (selected program) and spectator sports.
