Easy Techniques T Extend Life Os Your Furniture Want to make your fur niture last twice as long? You can save money, too, in cleaning and upholstering costs by following a few steps in caring for your furniture. “A few simple policies around the house can do wonders for your fur niture,” said Richard Brady, an Asheboro, in surance agent with eight years of upholstering ex ‘ perience. “And you needn’t do them every day, like vacuuming.” Brady most recently upholstered for an Asheboro business before joining Integon Life Insurance Corp. He also owned and worked in two Florida upholstering shops for seven years. “In those eight years I learned that caring for your furniture beforehand makes it last a long time.” Brady offers these tips: “Most of today’s furniture comes with a tag that says the fabric has been coated with Scotch Guard, which is a spray used to protect the fabric from soils and stains. It’s like a wax job on your car. “However,” Brady continued, “the strength of the spray wears out after six months. To compensate, you can buy a can at almost any hardware store for $2 or less. Then, spray it on the areas you use most —the cushion, the arms and the back, where your head rubs and grease can accumulate. You don’t have to spray on the outside. Page 7-B “Do this every six mon ths,” he added. “A can should then last for three full sprays- about a year and a half.” Brady also advises cleaning stains im mediately. “If a piece gets soiled from coffee, for in stance, wipe it up right away. If you wait, it gets worse. “Cleaning is very easy. Just mix some dishwashing detergent with warm water and make heaps of suds. Then, using the top layers of suds, clean the area thoroughly with a bristled brush. After it dries, apply a fresh coat of Scotch Guard.” Spraying and cleaning up stains right away can in crease the wear of your furniture by 100 per cent, Brady said.
