Thursday, March 9,10 T Mountain Story Airs March 20 On UNC-TV A spinning wheel, wooden buckets and split oak buckets were carefully strapped “Into the farm wagon which pitched and bounced up the rocky mountain path. The actor, dressed in buckskins, reined the horses to a halt, then turned for one mere trip up the mountain. In the mountains of Georgia on the set of “Appalachia Sounding", the authenticity of sets, properties, costumes and dialect was carefully studied with each angleof the camera. . “Appalachia Sounding,” airing March 20 at 9 P.M. on Channel 2, is the story of a mountain family fiercely striving to maintain its traditional values against encroaching in dustrialization. The pride, pleasure and independence of these mountain people are portrayed in Use production which was videotaped entirely on location in the Appalachians near Clayton, Ga. Discovering authentic artifacts and locations was not a simple task, according to High Fisher, producer and former director of program development for the University of North Carolina Television Net work. “We had particular problems in locating a site for the taping,” said Fisher. “We wanted to preserve the authenticity of the script as well as visually present the reasons for the bonds be tween the people and the land." “An' authentic log cabin was required,” he con tinued, “which also had electrical power. That was a pretty large bill to fill." With the help of the Foxfire Foundation, Fisher and production Director Ed Van Cleef of the Mississippi ETV Network, located a hand-built cabin estimated to bewer lOGyears old. The hand hewn logs and clay chinking on the exterior hid the fact that the interior of the cabin had been refur bished for modern inhabitance. When it came time for “dressing” the set, the Foxfire people again stepped in offering baskets, rifles and furniture from their extensive collection of Appalachian artifacts. Advice on the daily tasks of pioneer families was drawn from the Foxfire books. Costumes for the production were made in old designs from loosely woven patterned materials which cold have come from home looms. Striped and checked wool and loose-weave cottons have been worn in the mountains for 200 years. “Appalachia Sounding” was originally produced by the Carolina Regional Theater. The playwright, Romulus Linney, drew extensively from existing source materials and the suggestions of Appalachian lorists and historians to shape the story which celebrated the rich culture of the mountain people. The television script closely follows the stage play in story-line and use of dialect. Traditional mountain music is used throughout the production, and panoramic mountain scenes underscore the beauty of the land. The television adaptation is a co-production of the UNC-TV Network, the South Carolina ETV Network, the Mississippi ETV Network and. the Southern Educational Com munications Association (SEGA).
