Page 4-B CHOWAN HERALD Thursday, April 6, 1978 Sweet Potato Prices Increase Sweet potato prices were slightly higher this week, according to the Market News Service, North Carolina Department of Agriculture. Fifty pound cartons of cured U.S. No. ones were quoted on Thurs day at 9:50-10:00 with a few lower. Movement was good for the week after Easter. Egg prices dropped sharply this week with declines of 3-7 cents per dozen. Supplies are adequate and demand light. The North Carolina weighted average price for small lot sales of cartoned grade A eggs delivered to retail stores on March 30 were large 64.01 cents per dozen, medium 59.48 and small 44.96. Hen prices were steady to weaker this past week. Supplies and demand are both moderate. For the week heavy type hens with buyers loading were quoted at 21-22 cents per pound. Broiler prices were higher for the week April 3-7 period. Supplies are moderate and demand good. The North Carolina dock weighted average price is 44.37 cents per pound for less than truck load sales picked up at processing plants for April 3-7. This week 5,930,000 broilers were processed in North Carolina with an average bird weight of 4.20 pounds on March 29, 1978. Corn prices were 1-5 cents higher and soybeans irregular through Thursday of this week compared to the same period of the previous. No. 2 yellow shelled corn ranged mostly 2.51-2.58 in the eastern part of the state and 2.51-2.66 in the pied mont. No. 1 yellow soybeans ranged mostly 6.68-7.36 in the east and 6.45-7.26 in the piedmont. No. 2 red winter wheat 2.50-3.19, No. 2 red oats 1.47-1.65. New crop harvest delivery com 2.27- 2.38'/2, soybeans 5.66-5.95, wheat 2.66-2.75 and oats 1.28- 1.36. A total of 12,867 feeder pigs were sold this week on 9 state graded sales. Prices were 10.00-13.00 higher on 40-50 pound pigs and 2.25- 5.50 higher on 50-80 pound pigs. 40-50 pound US 1-2 pigs averaged 128.54 dollars per hundred weight with No. 3s 118.56; 50-60 pound l-2s 114.20, No. 3s 102.84 ; 60-70 pound - l-2s 101.43, No. 3s 89.12; 70-80 pound l-2s 85.82, No. 3s 76.01. At weekly livestock auctions held within the state this week slaughter cows were mostly 1.00-2.00 higher, veal calves 2.00 higher and feeder calves 6.75 higher. Utility and commercial cows brought 30.00-32.50; choice veal calves 60.00-71.00 with good 50.00-62.00; Good slaughter heifers 700-850 pounds up 40.-0-45.00; good feeder steers 300-600 pounds 45.00- 65.00; good feeder heifers 300-500 pounds 40.00-50.00 and feeder cows 27.00-37.25 per hundred pounds. Hog prices at daily buying stations this week were 50 lower ranging 43.50-47.00. At weekly livestock auction markets, top hogs brought 40.75-46.20 and 300600 pound sows 32.00-40.10. Edenton-Chowan Centralized Lunch Menus Centralized menus in cafeterias of Edenton- Chowan Schools for the next week include: Friday Meat loaf with creole sauce, steamed rice, mixed vegetables, peaches, rolls and milk. Monday Cheeseburger with bun, ketchup, mustard, french fries, pickle chips, apple pie and milk. Tuesday— Fish fillet, macaroni and cheese, tossed salad, green beans, fruit cup, bread and milk. Wednesday Barbecue with bun, cole slaw, but tered potatoes, grapefruit sections and milk.
