STUDENTS CLOWN AROUND AT SWAIN “Come to the circus, the Greatest Show on
Earth,” advertised the Ringling Brothers Circus-and go they did!! the SCOPE attraction
for students in Mrs. HolloweU’s, Mrs. Byrum’s, Mrs. Stalls’, and Mrs. Wilkins’ sth and 6th
grades at Ernest A. Swain School turned into more than just a day at the circus. The events
under the BIG TOP became a language arts experience for all students, who were required
to research circus information prior to this trip. Papers, poems, vocabulary words and
songs written by students were just a few of the ensuing activities motivated by the ad
venture, which was a first for many students. Through students’ art work, center the upper

National Library Week is
this week, April 2-8,1978 and
Shepard-Pruden is staging

Book Fair Set
At White Oak
White Oak School will
sponsor a student book fair
from April 3-7 Students will
be able to browse and
purchase books. The book
fair will be open during the
hours of 8:30 A.M. to 3:30
P.M. each day. The book
fair will also be open on the
evening of April 3 im
mediately following the
White Oak P.T.A. meeting.
Parents and friends are
invited to visit the book fair.
The fair will encourage
student interest in reading
and in building home
libraries, and will also
contribute to a worthwhile
project. All profits will be
used to support the library
and pay for transportation
for all classes at White Oak
to visit the Shepard-Pruden
Memorial Library.
Group To Meet
The Aces Athletic
Association will meet on
Tuesday, April 11, at 8 P.M.
in the Library Building of
John A. Holmes High
School. All members are
urged to be present since
plans will be made for the
Spring Sports Award
Banquet to be held in May.
Funeral Services Held
For Mr. Stokely, 92
Rufus William Stokley,
Route 1, Edenton, was
buried Sunday afternoon in
Beaver Hill Cemetery.
Services were conducted in
Williford-Barham Funeral
Chapel at 1:30 P.M. with
Rev. Richard Blankenhom
and Rev. James Langston
officiating.
Mr. Stokley, 92, died
Friday in Chowan Hospital
following an extended
illness.
He was a former em
ployee of Jenkins Motor
Company and a retired
farmer.
