Thursday, April 6, 1978 Letter To The Editor Anyone who attended the Swain School PTA Talent last Tuesday night eNarch 21) had the ail to rare priviledge of seeing our young school children perform in public. I also had the pleasure of witnessing the dress rehearsal the night before: I say pleasure because in many instances the actual performances were better then than on “opening night.” But, there were many more people in the audience, the auditorium was dark except for the illuminated children, and there was the loneliness of an uncluttered stage. The silence was deafening; if not reverent. That’s enough to frighten anyone, including this adult. The phrases “that’s show biz” and “the show must go on” took on special significance that evening. One does not attend a PTA 1 talent show composed of fourth, fifth, and sixth expecting to see artists. We go because it is part of the development cycle of our children, because it is the kind of environment we want to create for them, and tlie kind of activity with which we want our children tq become associated. It is also a time when we can measure ourselves as parents and teachers and tdke pride in what we and our children have ac complished. ; We grow by our mistakes abd there was a lot of growing talent show night. And more importantly, the mistakes that make kids adults. You had to be there to see our doing their thing. If last Tuesday night holds the promise of the future, we can all rest a little easier. Our children do' have the drive,, the en thusiasm to face and overcome adversity. Thank you, children of Swain School, for reaf firming that you are our reason for being, that you are our future; we take comfort in your strength. Never lose that quality of youth which transcends differences in ideology and philosophy. You are our hope for a better community and a better world. Philip M. Local Library Doings... “Any art work is a reflection of the artist and his discoveries about life, but to complete the cycle of the art work, a spectator must be reached —his emotions touched.” All artists have their own special meanings to relate in their creations to people who are fortunate enough to view their works. The above quote is Patricia Waff Carroll’s explanation of what she is trying to say through her art. The library is very pleased to announce that during the next month we have the pleasure of exhibiting Mrs. Carroll’s fantastic display of art creations. Originally from Edenton, Mrs. Carroll now resides in Winston-Salem.
