Before the vote was taken,
Mayor Roy Harrell spoke to
students about the political
process and his own political
endeavors.
Recounting his 15-year
political career, which in
cludes three defeats for
mayor, Harrell admonished
students not to let failure
defeat them.
“There’s absolutely no
need to give up if you set
your sights, on something
and get beat down,” he said.
“Learn from every failure.”
Harrell told the 27
students, faculty and guest
he felt the key to his political
successes had been in
volving people and his
personal commitment to
helping people.
He advised the nine SAC
candidates to always react
to their constituency’s
complaints and suggestions
but noted it was not always
possible to satisfy everyone.
“Reaction is the key,” he
said.
“More people should
become involved in the
political process,” he said,
•and noted his disap
pointment in the lack of
participation by the com
munity’s youth.
“Your vote is important,”
Harrell told students and he
urged them to register
themselves and to en
courage family members
and friends to do likewise.
Following the mayor’s
speech, SAC candidates
presented their campaign
speeches. Voting was then
conducted by secret ballot.
Those elected were: Joe
Bivens, freshman; Denise
Brown, senior; Ricky
Johnson, freshman; Lin
wood Evans, sophomore;
and David Sutton, junior.
SAC members will help
determine the Alternative
School’s policies, activities
and other special projects.
