However, Evans carried the eight
county district by more than 700
votes. Rep. James was second and
incumbent Rep. Stanford White
trailed by nearly 3,000 votes.
Jones defeated N.J. George,
chairman of the commissioners,
and Haify A. Spruill, Jr., an
Edenton town councilman, for the

Charles D. Evans
in the primary is tantamount to
election since there will be no
Republican opposition in
November.
Jones polled 1,141 votes to 718 for
George and 186 for Spruill.
Phillips, former board chair
man with a lengthy record of in
volvment in public affairs,
defeated Lueta C. Sellers, 1,256 to
742 for the Fourth Township seat.
In the school board race for the
Fourth Township post being
vacated by Morris Small, Fry
received 783 votes to 597 for T.
Gwen VanDuyn and 554 for Thirza
B. Shields.
Evans received a total of 10,937
votes to lead the incumbents in the
First House District. Rep. James
received 10,228 votes while Rep.
White garnered 7,517. Evans won
big in Dare County and also
carried Tyrrell County.
Rep. James was the leading
vote-getter in Chowan,
Perquimans, Pasquotank,
Camden, and Currituck. Rep.
White led the pack in
Washington.

bid for the Democratic nomination
to the U.S. Senate, also as many as
the seven other candidates on the

Rep. Walter B. Jones, as usual,
was tjie heavy favorite of Chowan
voters. He received 1,681 votes to
208 for James J. Bonner and 71 for

The Chowan County Board of
Elections reported a total of 2,231
votes cast. This is 42.57 per cent of
the registered voters
C.A. Phillips
