Sunday THE CHOWAN HERALD May 4, 1978 Feeder Pig Prices Higher A total of 12,035 feeder pigs were sold on 10 state graded sales this week, according to the Market News Section, North Carolina Department of Agriculture. Prices were mostly 2.00-4.75 higher per hundred pounds for 404*0 pound pigs. US No. 1-2 pigs weighing 40-50 pounds averaged 106.72 per cwt., No. 3s 99.60; 50-60 pound No. l-2s 98.12, No. 3s 87.72 ; 60-70 pound No. 1-2 87.19, No 3s 79.08; 70-80 pound No. l-2s 80.63, No. 3s 72.15 dollars per hundred pounds. At weekly livestock auctions held about the state, slaughter cows were steady to 2.25 higher, veal calves steady to 6.00 higher and feeder calves mixed. Utility and commercial slaugher cows brought $34.50- 43.75, choice veal calves 64.00- 74.00, choice slaughter steers at one market 50.50-52.25, utility and commercial bulls 1,000 pounds and up 43.50-53.75, good feeder steers 300-600 pounds 49.75-64.00, good feeder heifers 45.00-50.50, feeder cows 25.50- 30.50 and baby calves mostly 25.00-52.50 per head. Hog prices at daily buying stations this week were 25-50 higher, ranging at 43.75-46.50. At weekly auction markets, prices ranged 39.00-46.00 with 300-600 pound sows 32.00-41.90 dollars per hundred pounds. Corn prices were 13 cents lower and soybeans 23-26 cents lower through Thursday of this week compared to the same period of the previous week. No. 2 yellow shelled corn ranged mostly 2.53-2.65 in the east and 2.55-2.65 in the piedmont. No. 1 yellows soybeans were mostly 6.76-7.12 in the east and 6.63-7.05 in the piedmont. No. 2 red winter wheat 2.50-3.19; No. 2 red oats 1.47-1.65; New crop harvest delivery com 2.16-2.37, sybeans 5.60-5.83, wheat 2.74- 2.83, oats 1.30-1.36. Heavy hen prices were lower this week and trending lower for the first week of May. Supplies are fully adequate and demand light. Heavy type hens were quoted at 22 cents per pound at the farm with buyers loading. Broiler and fryers are 2 cents lower for the week of May 1. Supplies are adequate with the demand good. Weights desirable. The fob dock weighted average price for less than trucklots of plant grade picked up at processing plants for the week of May 1, is 40.51 cents per pound. A total of 6,757,000 head were slaughtered in North Carolina last week with the average live weight on April 26 at 4.13 pounds per bird. Egg prices were 4-5 cents lower this week with the largest decline on the medium size. Supplies are adequate and demand light. The North Carolina weighted average price quoted for small lot sales of cartoned grade A eggs on April 28 was large 57.45 cents per dozen, 52.41 medium and small 40.64. Sweet potatoes were slightly higher this week. Fifty pound cartons of cured U.S. No. Is were reported at 9.50-10.00, some 10.25-11.00. Supplies are light to moderate with demand moderate. School Menus Centralized menus in cafeterias of Edenton- Chowan Schools for the next week include: Friday Spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad, fruit cup, rolls and milk. Monday Cheeseburger with bun, french fries, tossed salad, mustard, ketchup, school baked cookies and milk Tuesday— Fish fillet, green pepper slaw, macaroni and cheese, pineapple upside down cake, combread and milk. Wednesday Chicken salad with lettuce, green peas, buttered corn, cranberry sauce, honey bun, crackers and milk. Thursday Roast pork, candied yams, mixed greens, apple sauce, corn bread and milk.
