Thursday, August 31, 1978 Letter To The Chowan Herald Editor To the Voters of Chowan | County: If you are considering a negative vote for the school bond referendum on Sep tember 19, consider the following: I;', Yes, there will be al6 cent tax increase per 9100 valuation. Yes, you may be paying a much larger share than some who own little or no property. Yes, you will be carrying the burden for more than just members of your own family. • You also will be sub jecting all high school • students to an overcrowded ‘situation. You will not offer them improved athletic facilities; you will not offer them adequate space for the ~ band, either for practice or , for performances. The in coming Chowan High School k students may not have the to participate • and learn with the band because of the necessity of an audition basis, taking ; only those with experience and expertise. 5 You will be subjecting \ them to a more crowded ' lunch schedule. (Ask any • JAHHS teacher about lunch < at the present time!) 4 4 4 “Professional Trouble Shooter” I JOE LEE COMPANY i OF EDENTON 24 HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICE * ★Heating ★Plumbing ★Air Conditioning J Contractor * OFFICE HOME * 482-8884 482-4581 t I NOTICE! E. Smith’s Store C. You will be denying them adequate vocational space with no chance of expansion. You will be allowing more cross-busing to occur. A negative vote will place the Jr. High at Chowan. With a projected enrollment total of 344 students, 235 will be bused from the Edenton vicinity to Chowan. A positive vote will place the Jr. High at Holmes, with approximately 109 of the 344 students being bused from Chowan area to Holmes. Fewer 7th and Bth grade students will be bused the full 15 miles if the bond referendum passes. The 7th and Bth grade students will have inadequate athletic facilities at Chowan. They will have no band room available, vocational facilities at Chowan will be limited. A negative vote will place kindergarten thru sixth grade at Walker and at White Oak. All well and good for Walker students, but White Oak students will be shortchanged. White Oak will need add tional classrooms built, with no money for cafeteria improvements, K-6 at White Oak will have no gym available to them creating a situation not equal to the K-6 students at Walker. A negative vote will not allow an equal educational opportunity for all the students in Chowan County. I urge you to think beyond the tax structure. Think about the benefits and ad vantages consolidation in a new high school has over consolidation in existing facilities. We cannot let the education of the youth in Chowan County suffer because we disagree with the present tax structure. Thompson County Ext. Chairman On Wednesday morning September 6, we will have a meeting of all peanut producers in Chowan County at 9 o’clock at Oak Grove Community Building in front of Chowan Beach. Beginning at 7:30 A.M. on Wednesday morning, we will have a short tour of three stops. One is a mite test on Ray Bynun’s farm on NC-32. The next stop at 8 o’clock will be at David Bateman’s. This will be a sweet potato test. At 8:20 we will be at Frank White’s farm to see a Kylar and Vitavax test. Then we will . go to the meeting at Oak Grove Community Building. This is a most important meeting to peanut farmers as we will discuss the decisions you will have to make in marketing your peanuts under the new program that we have this year. The decisions you make can influence the amount of money you get and we will have someone from the ASCS Office, Page Peanuts Growers Association, and the Univeristy to give you the different choices you have in marketing peanuts. I can’t urge too strongly that you, as a peanut far mer, should make a real effort to attend this meeting because there are certain fixed rules and regulations in this program that you have to understand in order to keep you from making some mistakes if you should try to market as you have in the past. We would also encourage you to start with us on the tour at 7:30 A.M. and continue on with us to the meeting at Oak Grove Community Building. Card Os Thanks I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for the flowers, gifts, telephone calls, visits and most of all your prayers. May God bless each of you. Willie W. Spruill pd.
