Continue Fight
RALKIGH - The N.C.
Court of Appeals ruled
against the state’s church
affiliated schools September
19 in their fight not to file
annual required operational
reports with the State Board
of Education. However,
spokesmen said the fight
will be carried to the State
Supreme Court and some
may face jail terms.
The appeals court has
refused to bar the state from
requiring the 63 fun
damentalist schools in
cluding Immanuel Christian
School in Edenton to file
the reports.
The reports are due in
mid-October. They are
required by the state for use
in licensing the private
schools.
Rev. Kermit Kelly of
Southern Pines, a
spokesman for the Christian
schools, said the schools
would not file the reports
despite the appeals court
ruling.
“It sounds like the only
choice we have, Mr. Kelly
said. “It’s either that (a
Supreme Court order) or
going to jail,” he was quoted
by the Associated Press as
saying.
Last week, Rev. Ashby
Browder of the Immanuel
Christian School in Edenton
indicated that he was
prepared to suffer the ex
treme consequences (of
going to jail) rather than
bend to the policies of the
state.
