The Board of County Com
missioners met in regular
session on Monday, November
6, 1978, at 9:00 o’clock A.M. in
the Fourth (4th) Floor Con
ference Room of the County
Office Building. AH members
were present: N.J. George,
Chairman; Alton G. Elmore,
Vice-Chairman; C.A. Phillips;
J.D. Peeie; and Lester T.
Copeland.
Reverend James Fenner,
Pastor of the Providence
Baptist Church gave the in
vocation.
The meeting was called to
order by the Chairman.
A motion was made by
Commissioner Peeie, seconded
by Commissioner Phillips, and
unanimously carried, that the
mihutes of the previous
meetings be approved.
Commissioner Copeland
reported oh the E.M.S. Council.
Eddie Dick, County Manager,
told the Board that the County
has received a C.A.M.A. grant
of 94,000.00 for a ten year capital

improvement plan for the
County. Total project in the
amount of $5,900.00.
Also, the Board has been
notified of a matching grant of
$14,000.00 from the Archives A
History to restore the roof of the
Courthouse. Bids will be let for
this project. Research will be
done in order to identify what
the roof was originally and
restoration for the best
protection.
A discussion was held con
cerning Chowan River and
problems of the algae. A motion
was made by Commissioner
Copeland, seconded by Com
missioner Elmore, that Chowan
County set up a task force
consisting of elected officials
throughout the Chowan River,
Albemarle Sound Basin for the
purpose of seeing that a suc
cessful solution to the algae
problem in the river can be
reached with J.D. Peeie serving
as a member of the committee.
Commissioner Peeie moved
to amend the motion by adding
that Commissioner Phillips also
serve on this committee. Motion
was seconded by Commissioner
Elmore and duly carried.
The original motion by
Commissioner Copeland
unanimously carried as
amended.
The School Board requested
two changes in their budget for
the fiscal year 1978-79,
requesting that the capital
outlay budget be decreased in
the amount of $4,303.00 and that
the current expense budget be
increased in the amount of
$8,486.00. This does not include
an increase of County funds.
A motion was made by
Commissioner Elmore,
seconded by Commissioner
Peeie, and unanimously
carried, that the School Budget
changes be approved as
presented.
A motion was made by
Commissioner Copeland,
seconded by Commissioner
Phillips, and unanimously
carried, that the County

Died Monday
CORAPEAKE Wilbur
Forehand Hollowell, 74,
brother of Ralph Hollowell
of Tyner, died Monday at his
home.
A native of Chowan
County, he was the husband
of Mrs. Alethia Peeie
Hollowell and was retired
from Planter’s Peanut
Division of Standard
Brands, Suffolk.
He was a member of
Eureka Baptist Church and
its Men’s Bible Class. He
was a former deacon. He
was a member of Woodmen
of the World and Order of
Red Men.
Other survivors include a
daughter, Mrs. Margaret H.
Sarick of Chuckatuck
Station, Suffolk; a son,
Robert W. Hollowell of
Chesapeake, Va.; a sister,
Mrs. Emma Hobbs of
Hobbsville; two other
brothersT Ray 'UoHowSn'oT
Portsmouth, Va.; and
Carlyle Hollowell of
Ahoskie.
A funeral was held
Wednesday at 2 P.M. in
Eureka Baptist Church by
Rev. Floyd Enzor. Burial
was in the church cemetery.

Trustees be appointed as
recommended: Mrs. Milton
Tynch be appointed to fill the
unexpired term of Mrs. Charlie
As bell, who resigned; Dr. Allen
Homthal to serve as Mrs. Lina
Macks replacement; and
According to Aesop, bats

creditors.

County. Bids being from
Creywood Oil Co. and Leary Oil
Co.
A motion was made by
Commissioner Elmore,
seconded by Commissioner
Peeie, and unanimously carried
that the County accept the low
bid, one year contract being
awarded to Leary Oil Co., low
bidder.
Aces Win Opener

The John A. Holmes High
School Aces Wrestling Team
opened its 1976-79 season
with a 70-6 shellacking of
Tarboro Tuesday night of
last week.
Tarboro’s only points
were scored with a forfeit in
the first weight class, with
the Aces running off 70
straight points, 30 of them
on forfeits.
Forfeits were scored by

Ist), Jackson (:48, Ist),
Rome (:43, 2nd), and
Bonner (1:37, Ist). Lassiter
(13-0) and Basnight (15-3)
won superior decisions.
The Aces will meet
Manteo tonight (Thursday)
on the home mats and will
host Plymouth on Friday
night.
