Page 2-A Art Classes To Begin As of March 1, part of the attic of the Shepard-Pruden Library will become an informal teaching art studio for Mrs. Carol E. Sick, a local artist and wife of Dr. Lonnie V. Sick. A member of the Chowan Arts Council, Mrs. Sick has organized continuing weekly classes for adults and youngsters in a series of six media from basic pencil drawing to oil painting The artist, whose own style is “realistic”, would like for her beginning students to learn to paint as she did, in the traditional manner, by studying proportion, light, and detail in dry media for a good length of time, before attempting the use of the wet color media. “This is an old-fashioned way to teach art,”, she says, “but I think it is still the best. A personal style can’t be developed well before the basics become second nature.” Mrs. Sick’s training in art includes nine years of private lessons in Burlington, and several courses in the art depart ment at U.N.C. at Chapel Hill. Since 1971 she has been a hobbyist painter, and has won several awards in recent local exhibits. At the 1978 Peanut Festival Arts and Crafts Show and Sale, she was awarded best in Methodist Topic All members and friends of the Edenton United Methodist Church are in vited to a “Hunger Fund” Pancake Supper at the church, 5:30 P.M., Sunday. A brief, special program j will be presented by Mrs. Doris A. Litchfield, Chairperson on Missions. All members of the church are urged to participate in the Hunger Fund appeal during Lent. The artist hopes that classes will bring out not only more interest in the fine arts, but also in the less obvious “ordinary beauty” in the area. “We have a lot of good material in this part of the country,” she feels. “The landscape artist could be as familiar a sight here as the quaint roadside scene.” Mrs. Sick will offer still life, portrait, and nature subjects to her students with occasional field trips to reach them. Prospective students should contact the artist for schedules and particulars. New students will be taken at any time during the year. Methodist Doings Edenton United Methodist Church will welcome Rev. Lawrence E.
