Budget-Stretching Tips
Getting the best value for
your food dollar may
become more of a challenge
each week.
But there’s some budget-
Letter To The
Herald Editor
The “sacredness and
quietness” of our Beaver
Hill Cemetery doesn’t need
the intrusion of a highway
connecting Ocean Highway
Number 17 at Twiddy
Avenue, with privately
owned real estate near
Virginia Road. A connecting
liefc would necessitate the
crossing of the cemetery,
the Potter’s Field, the
Beaver Dam.
The story of the cemetery
is like this: In 1880, Eden
ton’s greatest benefactor,
Mr. J.W. Branning, came to
Edenton to set up a great
lumber mill complex which
would give jobs to Edenton’s
citizenry, then still on its
knees as a result of the civil
Wjjr. He bought all of the
land from what is now
“Pembroke Circle” to the
old Fish Hatchery, and from
John’s Island to the Beaver
Dam near the Virginia
Road. Realizing that the
town did not have a large
Cfjmetery, other than the
Episcopal Church, he set
aside a portion of his land
beside the Beaver Dam for
use as a cemetery, aided by
a group of ladies known as
the Beaver Hill Cemetery
Association. The duty of
this organization was to sell
lots and to collect fees
for maintanence of the
cemetery. As the years
passed the job became too
much for the corporation or
the organization, and the
town was asked to take over
the maintenance of the
cemetery.
Since knowing the above
history, I doubt anyone
wiiuld agree that the town
h$ the right to run a high
way connection through
Beaver Hill Cemetery.
Anyway, our citizens should
attend the Town Council
meeting Tuesday to hear the
discussion of the matter .
Thank you,
Mrs. Raymond Carr
