Page 2-A Educator Guest Speaker WINDSOR - Fra*** and lecturer of ar chitectural history from Charlottesville, Vs., will be the (uest speaker at the Friends of Hope Com mittee's annual business nuntlng scheduled at Hope Plantation on September 32. Nichols will addrern the more than SO Friends of Hope and their guests ex pected to arrive here for the 10:90 A.M. meeting and subsequent luncheon. A longstanding member of the architectural historian community, Nichols has conducted extensive research into the ar chitectural influences of Ummas Jefferson to whom bis contemporary, David Stone, early North Carolina £*eraor and builder of Rape Plantation, has been likened. • Nichols was instranental id the successful restoration off the Rotunda, a Jefferson inspired building, at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. In addition, Nichols is credited with a significant role in developing the Bicentennial “Eye of Jef ferson” exhibit, displayed at Qie National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C., in 1976. . Nichols, a native of Trinidad, Colo., received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Yale University in 1935. He was regional director from 1935- U of the Historic Buildings Survey conducted by the National Park Service., From 1946 to 1950, he served as head of the Architectural Studies program conducted by the University of Hawaii. Since 1972, Nichols, a, has served as chairman of die Division of Architectural History at the University of Virginia, created from the earlier Division of Art and Architecture ova- which he presided from 1965-70. He is also a professor of art and architecture at the university, a position he has held since 1961, and has been a Cary D. Langhorne professor since 1967. This year’s committee chairman is L. A. Bailey of Rocky Mount, succeeding Mrs. Ernest L. Ives of Southern Pines, who resigned this year after serving as chairman since 1967. Co-chairman of the Friends Committee is Mrs. Marian C. David Stone’s library, with research based on the more than 1,4000 volumes listed by title in the governor's estate inventory. Also ranking a high priority is restoration of the King-Baxemore house; for which die foundation bricks have arrived. Other continuing projects undertaken by the Friends of Hope Committee include endowments, acquisition of furnishings and landscaping the Hope Plantation estate. The business meeting will be preceded by a sub scription Musicale, to be performed by the string quartet of the N. C. Sym phony. Swain PTA Sets Meeting There will be an im portant meeting of the Swain School PTA on Tuesday at 8 P.M. in the school auditorium. Some original ideas for beautification will be presented and the kick off for this years membership drive will be started. The public is cordially invited to this open house. Remember you don’t have to be a parent to support our children and teachers. Let’s all turn out to make Swain a school we can be proud of. U.S. Constitution Gets Emphasis Next Week The week of September 17- 23 has been proclaimed as “Constitution Week” by Edenton Mayor Roy Harrell. The Edenton Tea Party Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution urges the citizens of the area to study our Constitution during this week in order to more fully understand its meaning and to understand why this document has endured as the great charter of human liberties. This is the oldest con stitution still in active use in the world today and is the basic document of the United States Government,a government which protects the individual liberties of its citizens. The Daughters of the American Revolution urge all Americans to be worthy of its protection.
