Crime Conference Slated
Governor Jim Hunt and
Crime Control and Public
Safety Secretary Burley
Mitchell today announced a
Citizen’s Conference on
Crime Prevention for the
Elderly to be held Monday,
March 17 at 10:00 A.M. in
the ground floor hearing
room of the Archdale
Building in Raleigh.
“All too often, our older
citizens are regarded by
criminals as easy targets
for many kinds of crimes,”
Hunt said. Every senior
citizen in North Carolina
ought to be aware of this
fact and ought to try to learn
as much as possible about
the kinds of things they can
do as individuals to help
prevent these kinds of
crimes from happening to
Sailors, Ships and the Sea;
and Einstein, The Man and
His Legacy, to name just a
few. The fee for one week,
which includes tuition,
campus housing and dining
will be $130.00 for all par
ticipants. Scholarships are
available to persons in need
of financial assistance.
In addition to courses
each campus offers a wide
variety of extra-curricular
activities such as concerts,
plays, music programs,
nature hikes, together with
recreational sports such as
golf, tennis, and swimming.
“The enthusiastic
response that elder citizens
have given Elderhostel to
date indicates that a large
number of our retired
citizens welcome the op
portunity to stay active, to
travel, and to learn,” said
Bob Wagoner, North
them. This conference and
others like it are ways we
can help increase that
awareness.”
Mitchell added, “These
special people face special
kinds of problems in crime
prevention. We want this
conference to help us un
derstand the specific kinds
of crime problems faced by
our older citizens, and we
want to help them find ways
to prevent some of those
problems. We want to begin
to develop a more effective
strategy for fighting crime
against the elderly, and we
need the suggestions of
senior citizens throughout
North Carolina in this ef
fort.”
L. D. Hyde, director of the
department’s Crime
Prevention Division will
direct the conference and
presentations will be made
by various members of the
division. Citizens of all ages
are encouraged to attend.
Among the most valuable
and durable of furs is
that of the sea otter,
which had almost been
wiped out until protected
by international agreement.
THE CHOWAN HERALD
Carolina Director of El
derhostel. “Elderhostel con
tradicts the rocking chair
image of growing old. It is a
program for people who are
going somewhere, not in
terms of physical
movement, but in the sense
of reaching our for new
experience.”

year an even higher degree
of public participation in the
meetings to not only
determine additional needs,
but to set statewide
priorities as well,” the
transportation secretary
added.
Each of the 14 public
meetings will be chaired by
a member of the board.
NCDOT personnel will make
brief remarks concerning
North Carolina’s trans
portation situation at the
meetings followed by a
session for public comment
and suggestions about local
transportation needs.
Transcripts of the public
meeting will be available to
all members of the board for
consideration as it adopts
transportation im
provement projects for the
next year. The board is
slated to take formal action
on the update of the TIP in
the fall.
‘‘The TIP meetings
represent our department’s
efforts to carry out Gov. Jim
