Blue Mold Sighted In N.C. Farms Blue mold is present in North Carolina. The disease was identified on two farms in Columbus County on April 14 and on one in Robeson County on April 15. Please note the following. Massive sporulation was noted in both beds in Columbus County. Weather conditions this past Monday were favorable for spore production, movement, and infection. All growers that have not started treating their beds should begin to do so immediately as the plants approach the dime to quarter size. Those with larger plants should con tinue treatment application on a once or twice a week basis (depending upon weather conditions) and continue until transplanting to the field is complete. Fungicides containing ferbam (black material) are suggested for small plants. Those containing zineb, maneb, or metiram (white materials) are not as safe but more effective, and, therefore, are suggested for larger plants. Operation “T.T.8.” - short for “Treat Those Beds” - is a Campaign designed to encourage all growers to follow the preventive program. Correct use should result in production of an abundant supply of healthy tran splants and may reduce the chance of a field outbreak. THE CHOWAN HERALD fillips The final step of the Cam paign is to destroy plants in old bed site when tran spanting to the field is complete. Several field outbreaks of blue mold have occurred in both Florida and Georgia. Recent reports from Georgia suggest that the disease has become systematic (has gone inside plants) and has caused severe stunting and some bud kill. Some growers with high incidence of systematic blue mold are plowing up and planting over. North Carolina growers should consider field control methods. Her outfit is a fashionable unmatched suit-a knit mauve colored jacket and a creamy white pleated skirt. Awards for the top win ners were sponsored by Belks, Roses, Mill End and United Piece Dye Works. Narrator for the program was Connie A. Sherrill, Assistant Home Economics Extension Agent. Three outstanding clothing leaders were recognized for working with groups of youth in preparation for the event. They were Mrs. Ella Fox well, Mrs. Elizabeth Goodwin, and Mrs. Lucille Stalls. Andrew and John Cox were ushers. as a preplant incorporated treatment at one to two quarts per acre, flue-cured, and two quarts for Burley, provides full season control. The best way to apply the material is to spray on broadcast, followed by discing and bedding up. Some growers that applied multi-purpose chemicals are spraying material over bed and incorporating with a rolling cultivator or by re bedding. Growers that did not use Ridomil should “tool up” for field spraying. Fungicides containing maneb (Manzate 200, Dithane M-22 Special, and Dithane M-45) and strepthomycin (Agri-mycin 17 and Agri-Strep D) are effective. These materials are mixed with water at the rate of 1 pound per 100 gallons and applied in spray form one or two time each week to give full coverage. The first spray should be applied about 1 to 2 weeks following transplanting and repeated once a week until the threat of a field outbreak has passed.
