State Sen Melvin Daniels, an out spoken foe of Vepco's high utility rates, said the decision means "we ll have to fight a little harder.'" The Pasquotank County legislator told The Daily 7 Advance in Elizabeth City that he had already drafted legislation which could eventually give the Utilities Commission power over which Utilities do business in the state. Sen. Daniels has vowed nut to turn the issue loose “I recognize the power of utility lobbyists in all areas of government, he said. “I question whether or not the utility companies have customers' interests in mind when our money pays for the most powerful professional lobbyists I've seen" VA Reminders Being Mailed Thousands of elderly veterans and survivors throughout North Carolina are getting reminders in the mail that it's time once again to take a look at their income for this year to make certain it still meets Veterans Administration pension requirements The reminders come with VA pension checks in the form of a card explaining that pensioners over 72 who have been receiving VA pensions for the last two years must report certain changes If the number or status of their dependents has changed or if annual income has increased above VA limits, the agency needs to know, said VA Regional Director Kenneth E. Mc- Donald The pensioners receiving the reminder cards are veterans or their survivors who chose at the end of 1978 to remain under what is now called the "old" VA pension plan because it was to their advantage to do so. Mc- Donald said. Their pension rates were frozen at the end of the year, he added.
