Forestry, Agriculture Secretary-designate John R. Block told an overflow f: audience he will do all he :* can to improve profitability f: for farmers. Block, 45, is President fc :• elect Ronald Reagan’s r j: nominee for Secretary of the U.S. Department of 3 Agriculture, Currently, :• Block is Director of 3 Agriculture for the State of ;t Illinois. 3 Block told the committee, which is chaired by Sen. Jesse Helms of North :• Carolina, “One of the first fc •: items of business will be to 3 get inflation under control. •: We’ve got to bring interest •; rates down. None of this will *: happen overnight - but we 3 just have to restore •: profitability for the far :* mer.” j; Block was introducted at the hearing by Sen. Charles ~. j; Percy of Illinois, who said Block has “combined in his j: background many of the :• very qualifications required •i for this important Cabinet |* position. He is a working j: farmer with a complete :* understanding of what is required to operate our •: complex food production :?i system.” In an opening statement, )i : Chairman Helms said that a jsj vote on Block will come >: later this month when the I*: committee receives a report & on Block’s financial £ holdings and other matters from the Office of Govera *: ment Ethics. In his testimony and in •: response to questions, Block l- said he is a strong supporter I of efforts to develop ad -3 ditional export markets for U.S. farm products. Sen. David L. Boren, 3 Democrat of Oklahoma, :• said he is “highly en :* thusiastic” about Block and :• praised what he termed j: Block’s “revolutionary :• common sense.” Block also said it was his :• .feeling that farmers are the ?: better judge of how to [j manage their affairs than is :* the Federal government, :• and stressed his fun :• damental belief in the :« strength of the marketplace.
