May 14, 1961 Six To Participate In State Special Olympics Six members of Chowan County’s Special Olympics Team, who were first place winners in the Regional Special Olympics held in Elizabeth City, May 2 are now eligible to participate in the State Special Olympics to be held May 29-31 in Meredith Plans Summer School RALEIGH - Qualified high school senior girls can earn from four to eight semester hours in college credit courses this summer at Meredith College and later have these credits apply towards a college degree. The program is being offered for the 11th year at Meredith and is open only to rising senior girls. College level courses in 14 academic areas will be offered during the college’s June 14-July 3 and July 5-24 summer terms. Students participating in the program may request summer college credits by applied towards their degree if they later enroll at Meredith or they may request any other college to accept the credits. Students wishing to enroll in the program this summer must file an application with the admissions office at Meredith. Admission to the program is based on evidence of academic ability and achievement, strong motivation, and maturity by each student. Courses will be offered in art, biology, business ad ministration, economics, education, history, home economics, mathematics, music, physical education, political science, psychology, and Spanish. Students desiring further information on the program should write Office of Ad missions, Meredith College, Raleigh, N. C. 27611. . n .soo* • Helms Farm Bill Wins Senate Approval WASHINGTON - Senator Jesse Helms, chairman of the senate committee on agriculture, nutrition, and forestry, was instrumental in securing committee approval (Tuesday May 6) of strong Resource Con servation Title in drafting the 1981 Farm Bill. The entire package of conservation proposals in the Helms Farm Bill (5.884) was accepted by the Committee, along with some additional provisions of fered by other Committee members. Proposals adopted in clude: —A special Areas Con servation Program designed to target technical assistance and funds at localities having the most severe soil and water conservation problems. —A program to permit the Soil Conservation Service to use volunteers in conservation work. Permanent authority in law for the popular Resource Conservation and Development Program —Amendments to the Small Watershed Program to speed up the approval process for local soil and water conservation measures, thereby saving local sponsors time and money. Senator Helms said, “These conservation initiatives are designed to strengthen Soil and Water Conservation Districts’ local programs, protecting our valuable soil and water resources that are so vital to producing food and fiber, and maintaining a favorable balance of trade. Chowan County’s First Special Olympics, an athletic and recreational program for the mentally handicapped, was organized this winter and held its first games in April. At the Albemarle Regional Olympics, its team had the THE CHOWAN HERALD opportunity to compete in seven different events along with approximately three hundred other athletes from a ten county area. All students competed in the field and track events by age groupings.. At the Regional Olympics,' each athlete compked in two events.
