KW« COOKOUT FOR COORDINATORS - Coordinators for the Gre»n Thumb Program operating in the 10 county Albemarle area gathered in Edenton last Wednesday to enjoy a day off and a cookout at the waterfront. The program, administered by the National Farmer’s Union, provides programs and services to senior citizens and en joys the support of various state and federal agencies that also have programs geared to the needs of the elderly. Edenton’s mayor Roy Harrell stopped by to congratulate the old timers on their first annual Green Thumb picnic and welcome all the Green Thumbers for their jobs well done in their communities. The Green Thumbers picnic day consisted of a workers reunion, fishing, sight seeing, game of shooting darts and pitching horshoes. While the “GT” ladies unpacked and shared their lunches of all kind of goodies The GT Men surprised the ladies with 50. lbs. of luscious fresh fish for a fish fry treat. That will not ever be forgotten. Thanks to our young chef Nadine Rivers. After all the good eating and talking was over some just sat under the beautiful shade trees and went to sleep. While one green thumber said “quote” what a beautiful way to spend a sunny day fun’n and sun’n together. Lets do again real soon. Thanks to the Green Thumb staff of region“R”; state director Robin Bailin of Durham; area supervisor Clinton R. Barnes of Pasquotank County; area leaders: Willis Ballard of Gates County and Ann Johnson of Pasquotank County; safety monitor, Cliebert Thompson of Washington County for a job well done. Letter To The Herald Editor Dear Editor: Jimmy Green made a mistake; Jimmy Green admitted his mistake. We would not presume to say that your publication ever made a mistake, but all of us and perhaps other citizens of North Carolina have made mistakes in our lives. People who make mistakes also make material and substantial contributions to oUr State and to their communities. We know that Jimmy Green has made material andsubstantial contributions to his State -- North Carolina - and to his cbmmunity -- Bladen County. We have served with and known Jimmy Green in his service as a representative from Bladen County from 1961 to 1976, during which time he served as chairman of many important com mittees and as Speaker of the House from 1975 to 1977. We have served with and known Jimmy Green in his service to North Carolina as its Lieutenant Governor from 1976 until the present. During these years he has listened to the people of North Carolina and has exerted his efforts and in fluence to bring about a better North Carolina for all of its citizens. As an example of his leadership qualities, in 1975 when our State was facing a S3OO-million shortfall, it was Speaker Jimmy Green who appointed the first Base Budget Committee which ultimately enabled the General Assembly to balance the budget without any tax increases. His record reveals his compassion for the elderly and for the very young, for the handicapped and for the I disadvantaged. | In conclusion, we want to take this opportunity to emphasize that, despite his mistakes, Jimmy Green is a dedicated and capable public servant, and, in our opinion, one with much to offer the State of North Carolina and its citizens.
