Letter To The Editor To the Editor: Your paper’s item on Mike Johnson’s termination by the Town Council contains inflammatory phraseology which may give pleasure to those who support your running battle with Mayor Harrell, but bears little resemblance to a factual news report. An employee who has resigned cannot be “fired” as an after-thought. What the council voted to do was to shorten the period of Mr. Johnson’s terminal em ployment. In view of his critical letter of resignation, with its promise to release details to the press, and his subsequent refusal to an swer the Mayor’s proper request for specifics, the Budget Agreement Is Reached WASHINGTON - Senate and House conferees, following a four-day session, reached agreement on budget savings in agricultural programs, energy and food stamps that meet requirements of the President’s Economic Recovery Program. Savings for fiscal year 1982 in agricultural and farm - related programs totaled almost $1.4-billion. Food stamp program reforms agreed upon resulted in savings for fiscal 1982 of $1.6-billion. In an earlier conference, savings of $1.5-billion were reached on child nutrition program reforms for fiscal year 1982. In total, the savings in the three areas for fiscal year 1982 were about $4.5-billion. ■This amount is within the budget requirements set forth in a Senate resolution adopted this spring. At the close of the con ference, Senator Jesse Helms, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, said, “We’ve had some hard nuts to crack (in meeting the budget requirements). The House has had to give more than it wanted to, and so has the Senate. But the practical necessities of arithmetic are obvious.” He went on to say that he thought Congressman E. (Kika) de la Garza, Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, chaired the agriculture portion of the conference “with great dignity and poise.” Savings were made by such actions as: Tightening up on in terest rates and overall loan levels in Farmers Home Administration programs. Ju1y9,16,23,30c hg. wonder to me is that his terminal employment wasn’t shut off much sooner. In the business world, no employer would have been nearly so tolerant: such an employee would have been given a couple of hours to clear out. For an employee to lambaste his employer when resigning, and to threaten him with press exposure of what he judges to be damaging details, and then expect to remain on the payroll for a couple of months, is ludicrous. The Town Council should be more realistic. And your paper should omit the yellow journalism. N. B. Bullard Edenton, N. C. and grading, grain in spection, and naval stores’ inspection. July 23,30 pd Price Support Level Is Set WASHINGTON - July 18, Price support levels, by type, for the 1981 peanut crop were announced recent ly by Everett Ran, Ad ministrator of the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Stabilization and Con servation Service. The 1981 - crop rates, premium discounts, quality and location adjustments are the same as for 1980 - crop peanuts, he said. Rank said the average price farmers can expect for a short (2,000-pound) ton of peanuts is $451.69 for Virginia type; $459.09 for Runner type; $437.89 for Spanish type; $451.69 for Valencias from the South west suitable for cleaning and roasting, and $437.89 for other Valencias. Rank said the rates an anounced are based on the national average price support of $455 per ton. The actual support levels depend on the per cent of the various sizes of kernals in, each ton of nuts, Rank said. The method of computing differentials will be the same as for the 1980 crop, he said. For each per cent of sound mature kernels and sound split kernels, the support level per ton is: Virginia, $6,518; Runner, $6,390; Spanish, $6,422; Valencia in the Southwest suitable for cleaning and roasting, $6,786; and other Valencia types in all areas, $6,422. The percentage factor used in calculating the loan value of additional peanuts will continue to be 54.95 per cent Page 7-A FOR SALE 4 bd., 2 bath*, den with fireplace, fenced in backyard, 2.300 sq. ft. 9vy per cent assumable.
