October 8, 1981 THE CHOWAN HERALD
tejful Shooting " JOlea Dimed
ELIZABETH CITY
Now that the hunting season
is underway, Carolina
Telephone has issued a plea
for “careful shooting’’ by
hunters near telephone
equipment.
“Even the smallest shot
can cut a wire, shatter an
insulator, or otherwise
disrupt telephone service,”
Tory F. Daniels, district
commercial manager for
Carolina Telephone said.
“We know that most
hunters are responsible
people and would not
intentionally damage
telephone facilities or cause
other people’s telephone to
be out of service. Perhaps
people don’t realize what a

shot can do to a cable.
“I only ask that hunters
keep this problem in mind
and be cautious when they
are hunting. The worst
aspect about such needless
damage is that calls for
emergency assistance can’t
be made when telephone
facilities are out.”
Another problem the
telephone company faces
often is the malicious
damage inflicted on
telephone facilities. Many
times, according to Daniels,
ehen customers report their
telephones out of order,
investigation reveals that
lines, cables, terminals,
etc., have been maliciously
shot, cut or otherwise
damaged.
The company does not
believe that such damage is
caused by legitimate
hunters or sportsmen,
Daniels said.
It was pointed out that
state law provides a
criminal penalty of up to two
years imprisonment and a
fine in the discretion of the
court against persons
convicted of damaging
telecommunications facil
ities.

In the spring the Fashion
Revue is held. This is an
event where boys and girls
9-19 construct a garment
and model it in the fashion
show. Each garment is
judged and winners are
selected based on
construction techniques and
fit. There are three
divisions, preteens, junior
and senior. The senior
winner is honored with an
expense paid trip to the
State Fashion Revue Camp
held at Betsy Jeff Penn in
Reidsville, N. C.
Then in June of each year
boys and girls 9-13 are busy
constructing garments of 50-
100 per cent cotton for the
annual Back-To-School
Contest held in August at
North Carolina State
University. Youth from all
across North Carolina
gather in competition.
Chowan County has had a
state winner in past years.
