Carolina Review: Judge Issues Questionable Verdict In Driving Case
IRRES....Gov. Hunt ,is
an this week on an
y seeking tour, but
he left the governor
reed to do some ad
rative housekeeping,
e last several weeks,
Hunt has been under great
political pressure from
mental health groups to re
instate Dr. Ann F. Wolfe as
deputy director of mental
retardation in North
Carolina’s Dept, of Human
:| Resources.
:| Wolf was fired recently by
3|Dr. Sarah Morrow,
of Human
g Resources.
2 Although never publicly
stated, one excellent source
close to the scene has said
that Wolfe was dismissed
:•£ for some basic ad
it: ministrative reasons. Ac
■t* cording to that source,
•3| Wolfe “was away a lot..
;:;and.. noboydy really knew
§ where.”
-t- The source said that
•5 anyone in Wolf’s position
would have to attend
meetings. “You have to
•< expect a certain amount of
'•*: that, (but) she was hard to
4 find.”
**
:? The source said also that
Wolfe “wasn’t responsive to
her superiors - even the
people under her were not
:t responsive because they
:< just didn’t respect her.”
•:j Dr. Wolf’s annual salary
in her old position was
g $69,264.
Hunt did not bow to the
political pressure and retain
the doctor in her . nearly
g $70,000 post. Instead, he was
able to offer her another
o position in state government
gas director of crippled
children’s programs whore
£ she suffered a big pay cut.

indicating that the challenge
has been taken up.
•: Therefore the public has
been left totally in the dark.
We wonder why?
•: Dr. Thomas B. Warren (a
personal friend of mine),
:•} Dean of the Graduate
School, Tennessee Bible
College, Cookville, Ten
nessee, is internationally

*:j In support of my as

•: three oral public debates
held by Dr. Warren and
•j published in book form (I
*: have all three of these books
in my personal library). One
was with the world
renowned philosopher,
Professor Anthony G. N.
Flew of Reading University.
This debate on the existence
of God was held at North
Texas State University.
Another debate on this

:< Professor Wallace I. Matson
:• of the University of
3: California at Berkley. The
:• third debate on Christian
ethics was also held at North
3: Texas University with Dr.
:• Joe E. Barnhart of that

:» Warren is fully qualified to

3: oral debate to discuss the

Sen. James B. Garrison.
D-Stanley, was convicted of
careless and reckless
driving after drinking. He
had been charged with
driving under the influence
of alcohol, but the charge
was reduced. |
Judge Phillip O. Redwirife
ruled that the state had not
proved beyond a reasonable
THE CHOWAN HERALD
doubt that Garrison’s
mental or physical condition
was appreciably impaired
by the alcohol.
Garrison failed two
standard “field tests”
(touching the tip of the nose
and walking bed to toe on a
straight line) and was
taken to Wake County
Courthouse where he
registed .16 on the
breathalyzer test. A reading*
of .10 is considered
“legally” intoxicated.
The arresting officer
probably deserves a medal
of valor or something of the
sort since Garrison, at the
arrest site, proffered a
business card telling who
and what he was instead of
the car registration
requested.
Garrison testified in court
how the two items were
similar.
The senator’s credit, he'
has had only one other
driving violation (a
speeding ticket) in 40 years
of driving.
Garrison was arrested
May 28 at 1:30 A. M. while
driving home from a
legislative party. Such
party’s are almost a nightly
occurrence during regular
sessions of the North
Carolina General Assembly.
