Best regards, Olin Davis, Chairman Craft Co-op Items Noted You often hear about farm co-ops across the state, but most people are unaware that we have located in Elizabeth City’s old train depot one of the few craft co ops which exists in North Carolina. Watermark, with 280 members, is an energetic organization with craftsmen who produce a variety of items. For the tradition minded, some of Watermark’s craftsmen specialize in the Heritage Crafts: lye soap making, cornshuck flowers, grapevine wreaths, wooden dough bowls, and handmade candles. Others choose to do the Standard Crafts such as decoys, pottery, dolls, pillows, stuffed toys, and wooden toys. And other craftsmen are specialist at the New Crafts such as soft sculptures, tole painted birds, macrame, and ultra suede creations. Quality control for the craft items is assured through a Screening Committee which juries every craftman’s products before he is accepted into the co-op. After acceptance, a Standards Committee and the Shop Manager periodically inspect the many items brought into the retail shop; only crafts which meet the prescribed high quality levels are allowed to be sold. Leading the thrust for expanding the co-op’s membership and retail sales is the new manager Carolyn McKecuen. She has set as one of her goals to greatly increase sales through opening wholesaling outlets throughout the east coast. She has already personally visited and shown local crafts to outlets in New York, Philadelphia, Boone, Virginia, and Washington, D. C., and will be seeking other outlets for the large number of working crafts men. With so many craftsmen, the co-op can add another area of service to customers which most businesses can’t speciality orders. Whatever the person’s needs are, there’s a crafts man who can fill them. Special orders over the past two months have ranged from dolls whose names, characteristics, and clothes match the child they’re ordered for, the decorator rag rugs which have been desiped to match the color and style of the room they will be used in. Go to the old train depot on Hughes Boulevard any Monday through Saturday from 10 A. M. until 5 P. M. and have your senses delighted with crafts, both old and new, which will f»uw you with their scope and variety. • I V • atoMrtr. bump-., iota J . ttun.
