Grocery Survey Results Are Released A recent study by “Supermarket Business Magazine” shows that 23 per cent of the average supermarket cash register tape total is spent on non food items. It used to be that the grocery store sold hardware and the gas station sold items for the automobile. With such an arrangement it was fairly easy to classify items in the home account bode, and the grocery bill was the exact figure (Hi how much it took to feed the family. But changes in mer chandising have caused havoc in home accounts, ruined our definitions, and distored the cost of eating. Everything we buy at the “grocery” store comes under the “grocery” classification - including such things as soap 6, waxes, paper products, pet sup plies, nylon hose, and even garden hoses. Around 90 per cent of all cat and dog food sold is said to come from the “grocery” store. Consumers buy half of their hair spray, aspirin and toothpaste at the super market. It is repented that more money is spent for dog food than for commercial baby food. Creating a definition for groceries is a practical challenge for food producers and a problem in public relations. The consumer v may believe that the high cost of living begins with he may not realize that the cost of food has been going down in relation to his total income. Perhaps the answer would be to change the name of .grocery store to “home supply center” to better refect the wide variety of merchandise available there.
