The three-year period invoived more than 3.5 - million manhours. The Resource Group, which employs more than 550 people, is responsible for all company logging, wood raw materials procurement, timberlands equipment maintenance and man agement of Weyer haeuser’s 600,000 acres of timberland in North Carolina. “We are extremely proud * of this recognition of the attitude and commitment of our employees toward working safely, as well as of our safety program. Safety is foremost in our daily operations. Due to the nature of the vyork, we plan to continue the highest THE CHOWAN HERALD emphasis possible on safety,” said Robert M. Wiggins, Region Resource Groyp manager for the company. The work performed by timberlands operations in the forest products industry is considered to have a higher element of risk than many other occupations. Logging, for instance, involves felling trees with chainsaws and feller bunchers; hauling the downed trees to logging decks with grapple skid ders, usually over rough terrain; trimming limbs and tops; loading logs on trucks trailers or operating whole-tree chippers; and driving log trucks to and from mills and plants. Other timberlands management includes the operation of many types of heavy equipment for roadbuilding, forestry site preparation, and pre commercial and com mercial forest thinnings. Employees also are often called on the fight forest fires. Business Level Is Increasing The level of business activity in North Carolina moved upward in October, according to the Wachovia Business Index. The Index registered 154.2, up 0.4 per cent from the revised September level. Gains in services em ployment and other areas of non-manufacturing enabled the overall North Carolina economy to resist national trends. However, em ployment in the state’s manufacturing sector dropped slightly, reflecting the decline experienced nationally. In October in the non manufacturing sector, employment was up 0.7 per cent, primarily due to employment gains in con tract cpnstruction .arid services. Trade and government employment also increased. Employment in the manufacturing sector declined in both durable and nondurable goods in dustries during October. Price-adjusted average hourly earnings for manufacturing employees remained virtually un changed from September, while the average manufacturing workweek rose 0.2 per cent. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for North Carolina was 6.1 per cent in October, up 0.1 per cent from the September level. The national rate for October, was 8 per cent, up 0.5 per cent from Sep tember. The unadjusted unemployment rate in North Carolina was 5.6 per cent in October. Unit sales of cars through the first ten months of 1981 increased 1 per cent over the same/ period of 1980. Truck sale&were 2.1 per cent below I 1980 levels. 1 \ Helps Shrink Swelling Os Hemorrhoidal Tissues [ caused by inflammation I Doctors have found a medica- I tion that in many cases gives 1 prompt, temporary relief for I hours from pain and burning I itchin hemorrhoidal tissues.then 1 helps shrink swelling of these I tissues caused by inflammation.
